What you need to know about the COVID-19 vaccine availability at FIU

January 4, 2021 at 9:00am

FIU is working with local health care partners such as Jackson Health System and Baptist Health to facilitate COVID-19 vaccinations for faculty and staff.

Based on Florida Department of Health guidelines, however, persons 65 years old and older are being prioritized for receiving vaccinations currently. FIU faculty and staff 65 years old and older will have access to a limited number of appointments that are being allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, based on the order of response to FIU’s COVID-19 interest survey.

Faculty and staff in that age range who have completed the survey should be on alert for a call from the Division of Human Resources with more information.

For faculty and staff under the age of 65, your response to the survey will provide important information regarding community interest in being vaccinated should FIU become a vaccine provider in the future.

Please note that signaling your interest in this survey does not guarantee FIU will have a vaccine for you; likewise, it does not represent a commitment on your part to take the vaccine when it is made available.

If you have questions about whether you should take the vaccine, please consult your physician. For more information, please visit the Frequently Asked Questions page of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FIU providing the COVID-19 vaccine?

At this time FIU is partnering with Jackson Health System and Baptist Health to make the COVID-19 vaccine available to faculty and staff who are 65 or older on a first-come, first-served basis according to the order of response to the vaccine interest survey.

In the future, we hope FIU will be approved to become a vaccination site for the entire Panther family.

Which vaccines are Jackson Health System and Baptist Health administering?

Both locations are dispensing the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Is FIU requiring that faculty and staff get vaccinated?

FIU currently is not requiring faculty and staff to be vaccinated. If there is any change, we will let faculty and staff know.

How will I know when it’s my turn?

Members of the Division of Human Resources are working through the list of faculty and staff who are 65 years and older according to the order in which they responded to the vaccine interest survey.

Please be alert to a call from FIU – 348 prefix – to schedule your appointment.

Additionally, please ensure your contact information is correct in the PantherSoft system.

Can my spouse get the vaccine as well?

Currently, the vaccine is being offered only to faculty and staff over the age of 65. Unfortunately, spouses are not included at this time. If this changes, we will alert the community.

Can I get the vaccine through FIU if I’m not yet 65 but have an underlying condition?

At this time, only people 65 and older are being vaccinated through this partnership with Jackson Health System and Baptist Health. Please consult your physician about how you can get vaccinated.
