5 tips to stay safe and healthy at Summer Fest and beyond
Bass Drop University returns on Thursday, July 14, with FIU’s annual Summer Fest concert! This year, Adventure Club, Wüki B2B JSTJR and Ship Wrek will take the stage in Lot 5 next to the Wertheim Performing Arts Center (WPAC). The event is free for students and open to anyone 18 and up; those who are not students may purchase tickets on a first-come-first-serve basis.
As you plan for Summer Fest – and FIU’s exciting lineup of Fall social events – take a moment to review some important tips to keep you safe and healthy, provided by FIU Student Health and Wellness and the FIU Police Department (FIUPD).
- Stay hydrated – with water. It’s July in Miami, so it’s sure to be HOT. Plus, you’ll likely be dancing or doing a lot of walking. So remember to drink water throughout the day. You can also incorporate sports drinks to replenish electrolytes lost in sweat.
- Go with a friend, and stay together throughout the event. Before the event, agree on a safe place to meet should you become separated.
- Don’t forget to plan a safe way to get home, whether by designating a driver among your group or calling for an Uber or Lyft.
- Be mindful of what you are putting into your body. Mixing alcohol with other substances can compound their effects in a way that may result in injury or death. As a reminder: (1) FIU complies with all local, state and federal laws, including the minimum drinking age of 21, and (2) the use of illicit drugs and the abuse of alcohol are strictly prohibited on FIU’s campuses, per the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act amendments of 1989.
- If you, a friend or anyone else is not feeling well, SEEK HELP. Per the university’s Student Conduct and Honor Code, students will not be charged if they seek emergency medical assistance for themselves or another individual involved in an alcohol-related or a drug-related incident, provided that they stay with the person in need of help until emergency services arrive and they complete the appropriate educational intervention for the incident as determined by FIU Student Conduct and Academic Integrity. “We want all those who attend to enjoy themselves and have a wonderful time. Our priority is the safety of all involved. FIU will do our part, but we need you to do yours. In addition to being smart with your personal decisions, we need you to let us know if you see something that looks concerning, or if you see someone who may need assistance,” said FIU Police Chief Alexander Casas.
FIUPD’s emergency number is 305-348-5911 – program it into your phone now if you have not done so already.
