FIU’s Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom announced its Spring 2022 senior leadership fellows, which include distinguished national and international public servants.

This prestigious semester-long program brings prominent public servants to FIU to lead, along with invited guests, not-for-credit off-the-record student seminars, participate in talks and panel discussions, be available to meet with and mentor students, and serve as a resource for the entire university community.

“The Senior Leadership Fellowship is our Center’s signature mentoring program. Our goal is to offer students meaningful mentoring opportunities from leaders who have served at the highest levels of government and promoted, during their time in office, creative and innovative public policies that strengthened the free enterprise system and enhanced individual freedom and human prosperity,” said Dr. Carlos Díaz-Rosillo, founding director of the Adam Smith Center. “The program, now in its second semester, has been a tremendous success. It is part of our commitment to providing students with access to senior policymakers who can share with them their diverse experiences: experiences that inevitably involve both policy hits and misses, but can nonetheless be incredibly instructive.”

The first public event with the Senior Leadership Fellows will be online on Monday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. (EDT). The Spring 2022 Senior Leadership Fellows will participate in a conversation with Díaz-Rosillo about the fellows’ vision for their stay at the university and their views on the intersection of democracy, leadership, and the free market. Registration for the event is open.

The Spring 2022 Senior Leadership Fellows include:

Mauricio Macri, President of Argentina from 2015 to 2019. He was also twice the mayor of the City of Buenos Aires and served as the city’s national deputy, as well as president of the Boca Juniors Soccer Club. He was named one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people twice, in 2016 and in 2018. He will teach on “How to lead change: 8 lessons from business, sports & politics.”

“I am very grateful to the Adam Smith Center for giving me a space to share my experiences with students and faculty, as well as to learn from them. This is a critical time for the region and I look forward to our many discussions and meetings,” Macri said.

Raúl Melara, attorney general of El Salvador from 2019 to 2021. Prior to that, he served as alternate magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice - one of the highest judicial positions in the country- and executive director of the National Association of Private Enterprise, the largest and most prestigious business association in El Salvador. He will teach on “The rule of law in Latin America and its relevance for a free society.”

“I am looking forward to my time as a Senior Leadership Fellow at the Adam Smith Center because I am excited to work with FIU students and deepen their study of the current state of the rule of law in the Northern Triangle, which impacts our entire hemisphere. The next generations must be aware of our current reality, so that they can generate strategic proposals that improve the future for all,” Melara said.

Nicolás Monckeberg, ambassador of Chile in Argentina from 2019 to 2022. He began his political career at the age of 22 when he was elected councilor and deputy mayor of the City of Santiago. He later served as congressman for sixteen years in the Chilean National Congress and became president of the Chamber of Deputies. He then served as minister of labor and social security (2018 - 2019). He will teach on: “Democracy and the free market system cannot defend themselves: A call for action.”

“The defense of democracy and freedom in Latin America and the world needs - today more than ever - committed and courageous young people. I started very young in public service, and for the same reason, I am thrilled to share my experience and motivate FIU students,” Monckeberg said.

Loretta Sanchez, member of the United States Congress from 1997 to 2017, representing Orange County, CA. She was a member of several key Congressional Committees, including Armed Services, Homeland Security, Education and Labor, and the Joint Economic Committee of the Senate and House. She also served as chairwoman of several subcommittees, including Border and Maritime Security, Land and Air Tactical, Strategic Forces, and Emerging Threats and Capabilities. She will teach on “Leadership in a dynamic economy.”

“Now more than ever, we need leaders in all sectors who understand the value of market-driven economies and how to impact public policy to ensure democracies stand strong in volatile times. That’s why I’m so excited to be a Senior Leadership Fellow to interact with current and future leaders at the Adam Smith Center,” Sanchez said.
