Don't lose your data! Migrate to OneDrive by Oct. 6

September 19, 2022 at 4:27pm

Student and alumni emails have already transitioned from FIU Google accounts to Microsoft 365, a migration led by the Division of Information Technology. The transition enables the university to operate more efficiently; provides improved security to mitigate spam, phishing and other attacks; and gives Panthers access to the latest technology.

But the process isn't over. If you want to keep the files and documents currently located in your Google Drive, you have a role to play in the migration.

To preserve those files, you must move your Google Drive content to OneDrive (or any other digital storage you choose).

The last day you will be able to access your FIU Google Drive — and the last day to migrate your content — is Thursday, Oct. 6. The deadline was extended to account for any unexpected delays due to Hurricane Ian.

You will not be able to access your files after that day, so make sure to mark your calendar and save any content you love.

Panthers will have 1.5 TB of storage on OneDrive to migrate their content. Additionally, alumni will only have access to OneDrive until January 1, 2024. We highly encourage alumni to find a more permanent location for their data as the university is currently unable to extend OneDrive access beyond that time. Microsoft will offer a discounted Microsoft 365 subscription to FIU graduates after that time; visit the Microsoft 365 website for more information.

Ways to migrate your data:

Mover is Microsoft’s tool for exporting/importing content. View a Step by Step Guide. Please note, this tool is only to move from GDrive to OneDrive.

Google Takeout is Google’s tool for exporting content from your Google Account. Learn more with IT's how-to guide for Google Takeout.

The DIY option is to download the content from Google and then upload it to OneDrive.

If you have any questions, the Division of IT will be hosting a virtual training focused on OneDrive for students on Wed., Sept. 21.
