FIU a top patent producer

Patent production is an important indicator of a university’s impact

Once again, FIU ranks among the top 20 U.S. public universities in the number of U.S. utility patents granted in 2021, according to the latest report released by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and the Intellectual Property Owners Association. The annual list places FIU among the top 50 producers worldwide of U.S. utility patents.

FIU had 62 patents granted in 2021, placing it among the top three universities in Florida in number of patents received.

The report uses data obtained from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and highlights the vital role patents play in university research and innovation.

FIU is a member of the National Academy of Inventors, which is comprised of U.S. and international universities, and governmental and non-profit research institutes. The academy includes more than 4,000 individual inventor members and Fellows spanning more than 250 institutions.

The university is also a member of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). FIU is an APLU-designated Innovation and Economic Prosperity University, having demonstrated a “meaningful, substantial and sustainable commitment to university economic engagement.” There are approximately 70 member universities that have earned this designation.
