FIU is monitoring Subtropical Storm Nicole

November 7, 2022 at 11:43am

At FIU, we are closely monitoring Subtropical Storm Nicole, which formed early this morning in the Atlantic and is projected to head toward Florida’s east coast later this week.

Miami-Dade County is currently under a tropical storm watch. Broward County and counties north through the Volusia County/Brevard County line are under a hurricane watch.

While it is too soon to determine Subtropical Storm Nicole’s impact to South Florida, forecasters expect heavy rainfall from the system for portions of Florida by Wednesday or Thursday.

University operations are normal. Any changes will be communicated to the university community in a timely manner.

This is a good time to make sure you and your family have several days’ worth of supplies and medicines. Storm preparation may be a new experience for many members of our university community. For tips on what to do, please visit the FIU Department of Emergency Management website or Miami-Dade County’s Hurricane Guide.

Please monitor local media and pay attention to updates from the National Hurricane Center throughout the next few days.

FIU has a communication protocol to keep the community informed about university operations during emergencies, including storms. Please look for emails, follow FIU on FacebookTwitter and Instagram and check FIU News and monitor local media for updates.

Thank you for your cooperation, and be safe.
