The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine celebrated its 10th Match Day on March 18. Graduating medical students learned where they'll continue their training as resident physicians in their chosen specialties. They've been working toward this since their first day in medical school.

The students are on their way to becoming dermatologists, pediatricians, obstetricians, plastic surgeons, neurologists, internists, urologists and family medicine specialists, among others. More than a third of the students will remain in Florida, and nearly 20% will be staying in South Florida for their training. This is extremely important because studies show that most young doctors decide to practice close to where they perform their residency training. And there is a nationwide physician shortage, particularly in primary care. Forty-eight percent of the students will be going into primary care specialties.

FIU students also matched into prominent residency programs across the country, including residencies at the Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General, Johns Hopkins, Yale, Cleveland Clinic, Baylor, USC and NYU.
