South Florida is under a tropical storm warning and flood watch

The following message was sent to the university community today.

Dear FIU family,

At FIU, we continue to monitor a storm system that has the potential to develop into Tropical Storm Alex. A tropical storm warning and a flood watch have been issued for South Florida.

The system is expected to bring heavy rain, gusty winds and potential flooding to South Florida today and Saturday. By tonight, more intense bands of showers and storms could move inland and will continue to affect portions of South Florida overnight through Saturday afternoon.

University operations, including Saturday classes, are expected to proceed as scheduled. Should weather conditions deteriorate further, faculty and students who are scheduled to be at MMC, BBC, I-75 and Brickell campuses on Saturday will receive direct communication. Our libraries and Wellness and Recreation Centers are also expected to be open.

Please take necessary precautions, look for downed powerlines and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Also, please monitor local media for updates from the National Hurricane Center throughout the next few days. If you see flooding on campus, please report it to FIU Police at 305-348-2626.

In the event of an emergency, FIU has a communication protocol to keep the community informed about university operations. Please look for emails, follow FIU on FacebookTwitter and Instagram, check FIU News and monitor local media for updates.

Storm preparation may be a new experience for many members of our university community. For tips on what to do, please visit the FIU Department of Emergency Management website or Miami-Dade County’s Hurricane Guide.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and stay safe.
