The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum-FIU announced the opening of Field of Dreams, a solo exhibition featuring new and recent works by renowned Malawi born artist Billie Zangewa.
Across her body of work, Zangewa creates intricate collages composed of hand-stitched fragments of raw silk, speaking to the transformative nature of the artwork itself. As the result of the chrysalis process, silk is created through transformation — a parallel to Zangewa’s creative process of turning life’s challenges and complex emotions into art. Both the artist and the material embody a shared journey of metamorphosis.
The works in Field of Dreams are a departure from Zangewa’s recent figurative depictions of domestic life. During the pandemic, the artist shifted her gaze to prioritize the human condition and the interconnectedness of all living things. These multimedia works also examine today’s sociopolitical challenges and their impact on individuals and whole communities from one generation to the next.
"Field of Dreams is a powerful testament to Zangewa’s artistic evolution. Moving beyond her earlier focus on domestic themes, these extraordinary works explore the profound connections among all living things,” said Miriam Machado, interim director of the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU. “With a thoughtful lens on the human condition and the sociopolitical challenges shaping our world, Zangewa invites us to reflect on how these forces resonate across generations. We are proud to present this deeply moving exhibition to our community.”
Scheduled programming around Field of Dreams includes the Frost Art Museum’s signature Miami Art Week event, Breakfast in the Park, where Billie Zangewa will be featured as the Green Critics’ Lecture Series keynote speaker. This free event will take place at the Frost Art Museum at 10975 SW 17 Street in Miami on December 8, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those interested in attending can RSVP here.
