FIU welcomes new Board of Trustee members

The Florida Board of Governors has appointed Nestor Plana and Tila Falic-Levi to the Florida International University Board of Trustees.

“We are proud to welcome Mr. Nestor Plana and Ms. Tila Falic-Levi to the FIU Board of Trustees,” said FIU Board of Trustees Chair Carlos A. Duart. “Both bring distinguished leadership experience and a strong commitment to service, education, and community engagement. Their perspectives and expertise will strengthen the board as FIU continues to advance its mission and impact.”

Plana, Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Independent Living Systems (ILS), brings more than 30 years of experience in healthcare leadership and public- and private-sector development and management. Under his leadership, ILS has grown into the nation’s largest privately owned Hispanic healthcare company and a recognized leader in delivering person-centered, comprehensive health and social care for vulnerable populations. ILS has also been named one of America’s Greatest Workplaces by Newsweek and Plant-A Insights Group and in 2025 was named South Florida Business of the Year by the South Florida Business Journal.

Prior to founding ILS, Plana served as the founding President and Chief Operating Officer of Beacon Health Plan. His earlier career includes executive leadership roles at Mercy Hospital Systems, chairmanship of United Home Health Care, and service on the Florida Long-Term Care Committee.

Plana’s leadership and impact have been widely recognized. He was named Ernst & Young’s Health and Life Sciences Entrepreneur of the Year (Florida) in 2016 and honored by Health Evolution Partners as Health Care Innovator of the Year. His additional accolades include the Florida Award in Distinction from the American Federation for Aging Research, recognition as one of South Florida’s Movers and Shakers, and, in 2022, being named one of Miami’s Top 50 Business Leaders by U.S. Business Report.

“I am honored to join FIU’s Board of Trustees and support the university’s growth and excellence,” Plana said. “FIU plays a vital role in shaping the future of our community, and I look forward to contributing to its continued success.”

Tila Falic-Levi is a Miami-based educational leader, community advocate, and nonprofit board member with extensive experience in institutional governance and civic engagement. She is the founding president of the Jewish Culture High School (JCHS), where she has led strategic planning, academic development, and organizational growth. Her work focuses on strengthening educational institutions, fostering leadership, and promoting cultural literacy and community responsibility.

Falic-Levi currently serves on the Board of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, where she contributes to national initiatives centered on education, memory, and public engagement. As the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, she brings a deeply personal commitment to preserving democratic values, combating antisemitism, and ensuring access to strong educational opportunities. Her leadership and service have been recognized nationally, including being named to The Jerusalem Post’s “Young ViZionaries” list.

“I am honored to join FIU’s Board of Trustees and support an institution that values education as a foundation for leadership and civic engagement,” Falic-Levi said. “FIU’s role in strengthening communities through education and public service is deeply meaningful to me.”

Plana and Falic-Levi have been appointed to five-year terms beginning Jan. 7, 2026. Plana succeeds Trustee Dean C. Colson and Falic-Levi succeeds Trustee Chanel T. Rowe.

Dileep Rao, clinical professor of entrepreneurship in the College of Business, served at Universidad Nacional de la Plata in Buenos Aires. Working with that institution's provost, he helped lay the groundwork for a "unicorn-entrepreneur ecosystem" in Argentina.

Rao led lectures and workshops on growth ventures, high-potential entrepreneurship, venture financing, and business planning. His approach—focused on building companies before seeking venture capital—generated wide interest, including at a national meeting of Argentine university spin-offs.

Leaders from the IT firm Quanttrace also attended his session at Universidad Nacional de San Martín, gaining practical guidance for refining their business strategy.

Staci Bernhard: Supporting global strategy in Peru
Staci Bernhard, assistant director for the College of Business Office of Global Initiatives, served at the Universidad Nacional Micaela Bastidas de Apurímac in Abancay, Peru. She supported the development of the university’s first strategic internationalization plan, aimed at expanding academic mobility, research collaboration, and intercultural learning.

Experts share tips to help families of small children navigate holiday stress

Educational apps can be helpful in supporting early learning in young children, according to a new study led by researchers at FIU’s Center for Children and Families.

The researchers reviewed 35 studies from all over the world that included nearly 5,000 children under the age of six playing with interactive apps, and measured their academic, cognitive, or social-emotional skill outcomes.

The review found the strongest evidence for a learning benefit for apps targeting early math skills, followed by early language and literacy skills, which includes letter knowledge, phonological awareness, letter writing and vocabulary.

“This is the first study to review research findings examining young children’s learning from interactive educational apps,” said Shayl Griffith, lead author and postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Children and Families. “These findings are important because they suggest that interactive apps may be a useful and accessible tool to support early academic development.”

The review did not find evidence of any benefit of apps aiming to improve social communication skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), an important finding given that touchscreen technology is popular in ASD treatment.

Results also suggest touchscreen app games have the potential to support learning in other skill areas, including science knowledge and executive functioning. However, the authors point out that there were only a small number of studies targeting these skill areas, and further research is needed to establish whether use of interactive apps can effectively promote these skills.

Researchers state that more research on educational apps is needed, with focus on clarifying what app features and content may best support learning. “The integration of learning apps into children’s lives at home and school has outpaced the research needed to provide comprehensive recommendations for their use,” said co-author Daniel Bagner, FIU professor of psychology and director of the Early Childhood Behavior Lab at the Center for Children and Families. “Understanding how interactive app features support learning in different content areas will allow clearer standards for educational app makers.”

Research shows that children learn best when co-viewing TV with parents and parent behaviors while co-using apps have been linked to positive engagement and affect in children. Researchers recommend parents be involved as much as possible while their child engages in screen time and to replace typical screen time, like watching cartoons, with interactive educational apps that may help promote early skills in their child.

“Screen time recommendations often focus only on preventing overuse of screens rather than opportunities for maximizing learning,” said Griffith. “Parents and providers working with young children should pay attention not only to how much screen time children are getting, but what kinds of activities they are engaging in to maximize potential benefits.”

Bagner added, “Continued research in this area will be critical to inform the debate around young children’s screen time, as clinicians and researchers try to strike a balance between taking advantage of the potential benefits of new technology while encouraging limits on screen time.”

The study was published in Pediatrics.

Florida International University and technology start-up Tekmara are teaming up to accelerate the evolution of underwater habitats, combining advanced artificial intelligence (AI), integrated data solutions, and marine robotics to protect and conserve the world’s oceans.

FIU Aquarius, the world’s only underwater research laboratory, will host Tekmara’s sensor technology and AI-powered monitoring systems, allowing scientists to move beyond data collection and toward intelligent, real-time environmental monitoring.

FIU Aquarius is strategically located 60 feet below the ocean surface in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, making it the ideal facility for this new era in ocean science. FIU is the lead university research partner for the sanctuary and a global leader in ocean research, conservation and resilience. The collaboration with Tekmara is part of the future of Aquarius and underwater research habitats, which includes the development of Aquarius 2, as well as modular habitats that can be deployed all across the world.

“This project brings together two of FIU’s priorities to help grow ocean exploration: environmental research and technology,” said FIU President Jeanette M. Nuñez. “What scientists learn at the Medina Aquarius Program will prove pivotal for the future of Florida’s tourism and economy. FIU will continue to lead the way in marine conservation and research.”

FIU scientists and Tekmara technicians will develop and test autonomous systems, data platforms and AI algorithms in the environment in and around FIU Aquarius. The systems are designed to autonomously detect anomalies like pollution sources or oxygen depletion, learn from the ocean environment, and provide real-time solutions. They will largely be powered by renewable energy sources including solar and marine renewable energy.

As part of this partnership, FIU will be “cutting the cord,” and use wireless data storage and transmission. The end result will be a new generation smart lab located on the seafloor, continuously delivering scientific insights that are critical to global marine health and resilience.

“FIU Aquarius has long been a global asset for advancing scientific exploration, research and discovery,” said Mike Heithaus, FIU Vice Provost of Environmental Resilience and marine ecologist. “With these new advances, our habitat is becoming more efficient and more equipped to support the amazing work being done by FIU scientists, as well as scientists and industry partners from around the world.”

Knowledge gained from the AI-enabled systems will be incorporated into FIU’s Medina Aquarius Program, which is dedicated to research and education on the world’s marine ecosystems. It will help transform onsite training programs for scientists and astronauts that utilize the habitat’s extreme environment and even support the development of new technologies for ocean conservation.

The advanced systems will also support improved safety and security for teams conducting missions in the habitat and for FIU Aquarius itself. Detecting and tracking surface vessels, the systems will help ensure compliance within the protected Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and notify enforcement officials of unauthorized activities.

“FIU is a fantastic partner in the pursuit of making marine protected areas secure,” said Tekmara founder Todd Kleperis. “The potential exists to take what we’re doing here at FIU Aquarius and expand into other parts of the world.”

This collaboration comes at a pivotal time for the ocean technology sector. Thanks to the leadership and support of Congressmen Mario-Diaz Balart and Carlos A. Gimenez, FIU was awarded $1 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the College of Arts, Sciences and Education’s Medina Aquarius Program instrumentation project. These funds will be used to add new oceanographic instrumentation and communications capabilities. The instrumentation will establish a uniquely capable observation system at Aquarius Reef Base and will help scientists understand the conditions that drive the health of the ecological systems of coastal south Florida. The data will be made available in real-time online so anyone, anywhere in the world can monitor the conditions of the Florida Reef tract.

Five international experts to lead student seminars at FIU’s Adam Smith Center

This fall, FIU’s Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom will host five distinguished Senior Leadership Fellows: a former president of Mexico, the Dominican Republic’s minister of industry and commerce, a former secretary general of the Organization of American States, the vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and a former deputy minister of defense of the Czech Republic.

“A defining feature of the Adam Smith Center is the caliber of world-class leaders who join us each year to share their experiences with our students,” said Carlos Díaz-Rosillo, founding director of the center. “Their lessons inspire bold thinking and equip our students with the confidence they need to lead in business, government, and beyond.”

Students will have a unique opportunity to participate in multi-week study group sessions with the fellows, fostering meaningful, one-on-one connections with these distinguished global leaders. These free, non-credit learning study groups offer an exclusive forum for discussion, where fellows lead engaging conversations on topics such as leadership in the public and private sectors, economic development, global affairs, and the practical challenges of policymaking and decision-making in complex environments.

The inaugural event with the Senior Leadership Fellows will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the MARC Pavilion at FIU’s MMC Campus (10975 SW 17th St, Miami, FL). The Fall 2025 Senior Leadership Fellows include:

Luis Almagro is a Uruguayan lawyer, diplomat, and former secretary general of the Organization of American States (2015–2025). During his decade-long leadership at the OAS, he focused on strengthening democracy, human rights, and regional cooperation throughout the Americas. He previously served as Uruguay’s minister of foreign relations (2010–2015), ambassador to the People’s Republic of China (2005–2010), and senator (2015). Since June 2025, he has served as director of the Observatory for Democracy at the CASLA Institute, continuing his commitment to advancing democratic governance in Latin America.

“I deeply appreciate the invitation to add my contributions as a Senior Leadership Fellow at FIU’s Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom, a program recognized for its excellence in promoting good governance, good management, democratic values, and the development of political institutions to strengthen democracy in the countries of the Americas,” Almagro said. “I feel extremely honored and challenged at the same time.”

Sara Armstrong is an accomplished American leader with nearly three decades of experience at the highest levels of national politics, executive leadership, grassroots advocacy, and strategic planning across the White House, political campaigns, and the corporate and nonprofit sectors. She currently serves as vice president and managing director of the Federation Relations and Coalition Partnerships division at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where she leads relationships with state and local chambers and national trade associations across the country. Previously, Armstrong served at the RNC and in the George W. Bush administration (2002–2009), where she was special assistant to the president, deputy chief of staff to First Lady Laura Bush, and director of the White House Visitors Office.

“I am honored to serve as a Senior Leadership Fellow at Florida International University’s Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom,” Armstrong said. “I look forward to supporting the center’s mission to inspire our future generation of leaders with sessions that will explore the intersection of government, politics and business, and how free enterprise has improved economic growth and prosperity around the world.”

Víctor “Ito” Bisonó is the Dominican Republic’s minister of industry, commerce, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MICM), a position he has held since 2020. As a seasoned politician and public servant with over 30 years of experience, he has spearheaded efforts to modernize the country’s industrial and commercial policies, enhancing competitiveness, fostering innovation, and attracting investment. A four-term deputy for the national district (2002–2020), he has long championed the country’s economic and social development. He is also the founder of the Center for Public Policy Analysis (CAPP) and the author of five books, including his most recent, “Desde Adentro: Hacia el país que queremos,” offering reflections on national transformation and policy innovation.

“It is an honor to share the lessons learned along the journey of transforming the public sector in times marked by uncertainty. Leading with resolve is not just about making firm decisions, but about building trust, delivering results, and expanding the boundaries of what is possible through public service,” Bisonó said. “I look forward to this space of exchange on how ethical and courageous leadership can drive meaningful change in Latin America and around the world.”

Felipe Calderón served as president of Mexico from 2006 to 2012, leading efforts to promote economic growth, strengthen the rule of law, and increase investment in infrastructure, education, and competitiveness. During his administration, he championed free trade, deregulation, and private investment, even in the face of the 2009 global financial crisis. He chaired both the G20 Leaders’ Summit and the UN COP 16 Climate Change Conference, and currently serves as honorary chairman of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate. Calderón is also the founder and president of the Human Sustainable Development Foundation and has held leadership roles with the World Resources Institute and the FIA (International Automobile Federation) Environment and Sustainability Commission. His international recognition includes being named “Statesman of the Year” by the World Economic Forum and “Champion of the Earth” by the United Nations.

"I am very happy to share with the students my experiences and knowledge acquired through a life dedicated to public service, not only as president of Mexico, but for years before, as a fighter for democracy and opposition leader during the democratic period," Calderón said. "As president, I needed to face enormous challenges: the economic crisis of 2009, the AH1N1 flu pandemic, and the violence unleashed by drug trafficking. I made the decision to face organized crime and narcotraffic with the full weight of the law, and that was the right decision. In the end, we were able to contribute to making Mexico a highly competitive nation in economic terms and a full democracy. We will talk about all those issues this autumn at FIU."

Jan Havránek is a Czech diplomat, foreign policy expert, and former deputy minister of defense, with over two decades of experience at the nexus of transatlantic security, strategic leadership, and defense transformation. He currently serves as the deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, D.C., where he has led international cooperation, defense planning, and crisis response during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kabul evacuation, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He has held senior roles at NATO as well as research and policy roles with leading think tanks.

“This seminar is about more than foreign policy – it’s about leadership in context,” Havránek said. “I’ve watched world leaders make tough choices, negotiate with rivals, and build unlikely alliances. Foreign policy doesn’t happen in a vacuum; real people with histories and constraints are behind every decision. This program asks students to examine not just what happened, but why – and what leadership it required.”

FIU gets $6.375 million renewal from NSF for Everglades research

The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida and Florida International University (FIU) are launching an initiative to examine phosphorus in Big Cypress National Preserve.

Big Cypress is a protected area encompassing 729,000 acres northwest of Everglades National Park and a central piece of the Everglades ecosystem. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant growth, but excess phosphorus, mostly coming from agricultural and urban sources, can lead to ecosystem changes that negatively impact species and ecosystem functions.

The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida will contribute $600,000 over the next three years to help fund FIU water quality research in the western Everglades region. Evelyn Gaiser, aquatic ecologist and George M. Barley Jr. Endowed Scholars Chair, and researcher Kelsey Solomon will conduct controlled experiments to evaluate how different levels of phosphorus impact the local ecosystem.

“This historic gift marks a major victory for the tribe, FIU, and most importantly, the greater Everglades environment,” Gaiser said. “It builds upon the long-standing relationship between FIU and the Miccosukee Tribe to ensure that water quality and wilderness are protected while water flow to the region is being restored.”

For years, FIU and the tribe have worked together to protect the iconic and imperiled Florida Everglades as part of the largest ecosystem restoration project on the planet. Researchers in FIU’s Institute of Environment have been leading the science behind Everglades research and restoration for decades. Gaiser was part of the FIU team and helped lead the research that led to the establishment of a water-quality standard to protect Everglades National Park from excess phosphorus sources. The standard was incorporated into the federal Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan and is still in place today. The tribe seeks to partner with FIU in supporting the next generation of scientists working toward a sustainable future for the Everglades.

Gaiser and Solomon, who is FIU’s George M. Barley Jr. Post Doctoral Fellow, are leveraging that experience in this new partnership for Big Cypress. The project’s goal is to ensure healthy wetlands that can continue to support wildlife and cultural traditions.

“Water quality is crucial to maintaining the health of the Everglades, and this collaboration with FIU is an important step toward safeguarding the wetlands that the tribe and countless species depend on,” said Talbert Cypress, chairman of the Miccosukee Tribe. “We are proud to be part of a partnership that not only protects the tribe’s cultural heritage but also serves as a model of sustainable environmental stewardship.”

The research is kicking off as preparations are under way for the start of the Western Everglades Restoration Project, which is tentatively scheduled to begin next year. Gaiser said the data collected as part of this collaborative research project could aid water quality management decisions. In addition to FIU and the tribe, other partners include Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades Foundation and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

“This is a prime example of how combining Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge – the beliefs about the relationships between living beings and their environment – with science could achieve truly transformative results for environmental conservation,” Solomon said.

Groundbreaking research by ADHD pioneer William E. Pelham, Jr., who passed away last year, found that behavioral therapy – when used first – was less expensive and more effective than medication in treating children with ADHD.

Building on this foundation, a new study by Pelham's team at the FIU Center for Children and Families, published in Evidence-Based Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health, sought to explore whether adding medication to the initial behavioral therapy—known to be the most effective first-step treatment—would improve outcomes.

The findings revealed that children who started treatment with both behavioral therapy and medication showed more disruptive behaviors after the medication was discontinued compared to those who initially received only behavioral therapy and then added medication later in the treatment.

“We were shocked to discover that starting with a combined treatment approach could actually reduce the effectiveness of behavioral strategies,” said Marcela Ramos, research assistant professor and lead author of the study. “Introducing medication alongside behavioral therapy may limit children’s opportunities to fully engage with and benefit from behavior management techniques.”

The study involved 248 children, predominantly male (77%) and Hispanic (85%), who participated in CCF’s eight-week Summer Treatment Program, designed for children with ADHD and related challenges. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group received intensive behavior therapy with medication, while the other received behavior therapy with a placebo. After three weeks, the groups switched treatments for three additional weeks.

The findings suggest that starting with medication might hinder the effectiveness of behavioral therapy by reducing opportunities for children to develop self-regulation skills. Children who began with the combined approach showed more behavioral issues after medication was withdrawn compared to those who started with behavioral therapy alone.

“Medication is often the first treatment choice for ADHD, but our results indicate that starting with behavioral therapy and then introducing medication could lead to better behavioral outcomes,” said Dr. Ramos. “These findings might prompt a re-evaluation of current ADHD treatment practices to achieve more lasting improvements in behavior.”

This study builds on the legacy of William E. Pelham, Jr., whose research and ADHD treatment approach – behavior therapy, medications and a combination of the two – is the foundation of today’s standard ADHD treatment. His recent studies also highlighted that ADHD medication alone does not improve classroom learning for children.

“For decades, Dr. Pelham’s groundbreaking research established the combined treatment approach as a standard in ADHD care, influencing clinical guidelines worldwide,” Dr. Ramos said. “Our recent findings suggest that the order in which treatments are administered could be crucial. This insight highlights the need for further research, and I am honored to continue building on Dr. Pelham’s legacy to enhance our understanding of ADHD treatment strategies.”

The Florida Board of Governors has appointed Fred Voccola, co-founder and vice chairman of Kaseya, as the newest member of the FIU Board of Trustees. He succeeds Rogelio Tovar.

“Fred Voccola brings to our board deep experience in business leadership, entrepreneurship and the global technology sector, as well as being one of the global innovators in AI's transformational impact on global business," said Carlos A. Duart, chair of FIU’s Board of Trustees. “His perspective will be invaluable as FIU continues to grow as a top public research university driving technology and innovation.”

Voccola serves as vice chairman of Kaseya’s Board of Directors, after more than a decade as CEO. During his tenure, he led the company’s transformation into a global leader in AI-powered cybersecurity and IT management software for small and mid-size businesses. A seasoned technology entrepreneur, he previously co-founded and led multiple successful software ventures, including Identify Software, Trust Technology Corp., and Yodle. He has served on several technology boards and is a recognized thought leader in AI, cybersecurity, and business transformation. Through his foundation, he also supports veterans, animal welfare, and public policy initiatives.

“Living in Miami for the last 20 years, I have seen the evolution of FIU and the central role it plays in educating leaders across industries,” Voccola said. “I am excited about serving on this board and working alongside visionary leaders focused on student success and research excellence.”

Voccola’s term on the board runs through Jan. 6, 2028.

Furthermore, in a unanimous decision, the FIU Board of Trustees elected Carlos A. Duart as chair and Marc D. Sarnoff as vice chair. Both will serve two-year terms effective immediately.

Duart, who has served as vice chair for the last two years, will succeed Tovar, who has chaired the BOT since 2023 after serving as a trustee since 2018. Duart also served as chair of the Presidential Search Committee, which spearheaded the search for FIU’s seventh president, Jeanette M. Nuñez.

“It is a privilege to serve as chair of the FIU Board of Trustees,” Duart said. “As an alumnus, I know firsthand the power of this institution to transform lives. I look forward to working closely with President Nuñez, Vice Chair Sarnoff and my fellow trustees to continue advancing FIU’s mission and impact as a top public research university.”

A two-time FIU graduate, Duart has served as a trustee since October 2021. He is the founder and CEO of CDR Enterprises Inc. and its subsidiaries CDR Maguire Inc. and CDR Capital LLC as well as its affiliate CDR Health Care Inc. The firms specialize in heavy civil engineering, emergency medicine, disaster response and recovery, and project finance. He served on the Florida International University Foundation Board of Directors (2009-2017) and serves on the steering committee of the University Transportation Research Center. He is a member of the FIU College of Business’ Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame (2010) as well as the recipient of the FIU Outstanding Alumnus Medallion (2011) and Torch Award (2013).

Sarnoff, a Florida Supreme Court certified mediator and former commissioner for the City of Miami, has served as a trustee since 2016. He is also a partner in the Miami office of Shutts & Bowen, where he practices land use and government relations law, and is a member of the Real Estate Practice Group. His experience in land use planning and zoning includes involvement in the creation of the Perez Art Museum, the Philip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, Museum Park, the development of the Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center, and the creation of the 90,000 square foot Viacom movie studio. He is also a founding member of the Catholic-Jewish Alliance, an organization dedicated to combatting antisemitism, focused on our schools.

“It’s an honor for me to serve as vice chair of the board,” Sarnoff said. “FIU is a special place that draws you in because we are changing lives in the classroom, in the lab and on the field.”

President Jeanette M. Nuñez said under the new board leadership, and with the addition of Voccola to the BOT, FIU’s impact will grow.

Freight payment platform PayCargo has awarded Florida International University’s College of Business (FIU Business) a $1.25 million gift to create the PayCargo Supply Chain and Logistics Program.

FIU Business was the first business school in Florida to launch a Master of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management program in fall 2018. In 2022, the program was ranked No. 7 in the U.S. in the QS World University Rankings. The college introduced a Bachelor of Business Administration in Logistics and Supply Chain Management in 2018.

“On behalf of the PayCargo family that includes over 30 FIU graduates, we are delighted to provide the gift to support FIU’s College of Business and the newly named PayCargo Supply Chain and Logistics Program.” said Eduardo del Riego, CEO of PayCargo, and FIU Business alumnus with a BBA in Finance. “Our partnership will allow FIU to create more connections to key businesses driving the growth of our industry as well as educate the students on leading edge technologies and concepts that will help solidify South Florida as a center of excellence for logistics and supply chain.”

PayCargo’s gift will help build the program’s infrastructure and faculty expertise. It will help expand FIU Business’s student recruitment and career readiness, including fellowships and internships, develop a speaker series with high-level industry executives and organize company visits. Faculty-focused efforts include adding connections with logistics and supply chain researchers and increasing participation in international conferences.

“The gift is a recognition of what we have accomplished and what we can have,” said William Hardin, dean of FIU Business, whose undergraduate international business program is currently ranked No. 2 by U.S. News & World Report. “It allows us to dedicate resources year-round, attend events all over the U.S., elevate our progress and be out in the industry. The International Air Transport Association conference, for example, is important but it takes resources for faculty and students to attend.”

Founded in 2005, PayCargo’s cloud-based technology enables virtual payments for air and ocean carriers, maritime ports, ground handlers, freight forwarders and customs brokers, resulting in quicker cargo release for businesses.

FIU Board of Trustees to consider out-of-state fee increase proposal

Dear FIU students,

The FIU Board of Trustees will consider a proposal to increase out-of-state student fees by 10 percent, effective fall 2025.

This proposal will not alter the tuition or fees of in-state students.

This proposed increase will impact out-of-state students in undergraduate and many graduate and professional programs. At this time and for Fall 2025, increases to out-of-state fees are not proposed for graduate self-supporting or market tuition rate programs.

The board will consider the proposal during a virtual meeting scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30th (meeting date and time are subject to change), which can be viewed at webcast.FIU.edu.

Explanation of out-of-state fee increases

Out-of-state fee – This is the part of tuition that out-of-state students pay above in-state tuition, which was last changed more than 10 years ago. This fee maintains the quality and competitiveness of academic offerings and student services in the face of rising operational costs. The purpose of this increase is to align out-of-state student contributions with the cost of providing instruction, facilities, and services at FIU.

Out-of-state financial aid fee – This fee funds student financial aid awards and associated administrative costs. It too has remained unchanged for more than 10 years. During this time, the university has significantly expanded its need-based and merit-based programs. The proposed increase will help to offset growing costs.

As described above, if this proposal is approved by the Board of Trustees, the increase will impact out-of-state students in some graduate programs differently. Please refer to this chart for more information. Additional details will be available after the July 30th BOT meeting.

Today, the Florida Board of Governors confirmed the appointment of Jeanette M. Nuñez as FIU’s seventh president and announced that FIU once again is the number one university in the state in performance.

“We proudly welcome Jeanette Nuñez as the seventh president of Florida International University. President Nuñez brings a wealth of experience, a deep connection to South Florida, and a bold vision for the future,” said Brian Lamb, Chair of the Florida Board of Governors. “Through her leadership, FIU will be elevated to new heights and strengthen its impact across the globe.”

On June 2, the FIU Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Nuñez as FIU’s president. Nuñez, who was named interim president in February, is the first FIU alumna to hold the position. She previously served as a state representative and lieutenant governor of the State of Florida.

“Congratulations to Jeanette Nuñez on her confirmation as the 7th president of Florida International University,” said Ray Rodrigues, Chancellor of the State University System of Florida. “Through her leadership, FIU will advance its mission of academic excellence, innovation, and opportunity for all students.”

Nuñez’s confirmation came on the same day FIU was named the top university in the state in performance metrics, for the third consecutive year. In Florida, state universities are evaluated on key indicators including four-year graduation rate, retention rate, cost of attendance to students, and post-graduation employment. This year, FIU earned a score of 96 out of 100.

“It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the seventh president of FIU,” said Nuñez. "Four out of the last five years, FIU has earned its position as the top performing university in the state, proof that our approach is working. FIU is number one because of the commitment of our students, faculty, and staff to achieve excellence. Over the next five years, we will focus on sustaining our success through our strategic plan, Experience Impact 2030. Our vision is clear, our future is bold, and our time is now.”

Over the past year, FIU has increased the four-year graduation rate of freshmen (first-time in college students) by 5.1 percentage points, reduced the average cost of attendance by $1,370, and increased the share of graduate degrees awarded in strategic emphasis areas.

FIU’s long-term investment in student achievement and workforce readiness is yielding success. Over the past five years, the university has elevated the four-year graduation rate of first-time in college students by an impressive 20.7 percentage points, increased the percentage of bachelor’s degrees awarded in strategic emphasis areas by 10.9 percentage points, and improved the six-year graduation rate for FTIC Pell Grant recipients by 9.2 percentage points. The median wage of graduates has increased by $9,400, a 22.9% jump, and the share of bachelor’s graduates employed or enrolled one year after graduation has grown by 8.4 points.

“Our goal has been to allocate resources and implement strategies to ensure our students and our state receive the highest possible return on investment from FIU,” said Provost, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Elizabeth M. Béjar. “Our entire team is focused on delivering the highest quality education and overall experience to our students.”

Today the Florida International University Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Jeanette M. Nuñez the university’s seventh president. The selection of Nuñez, who has served as FIU’s interim president since February, is pending confirmation by the Florida Board of Governors.

“President-Designate Nuñez’s unique combination of experience and extensive network make her the ideal leader to help propel FIU into the future,” said Roger Tovar, chair of the FIU Board of Trustees. “I can think of no better advocate for FIU.”

Once confirmed, Nuñez will be the first FIU alumna to hold the top job. She earned a bachelor’s degree from FIU in political science and international relations in 1994 and a master’s degree in public administration in 1998. She also is a former adjunct faculty member who taught a graduate-level course on health policy and served as a guest lecturer over the years.

Prior to serving as interim president, Nuñez spent 15 years serving the State of Florida both as a state representative and as lieutenant governor. Before serving in government, she was vice president of governmental affairs at Jackson Health Systems and held similar leadership positions at Kendall Regional and Aventura Hospital Medical Center.

In February, the FIU Board of Trustees named her interim president.

“I am humbled by the trust that has been placed in me by the Board of Trustees to serve as the seventh President of my alma mater,” said Nuñez. “FIU is a preeminent, top 50, major public research university and I look forward to leading our institution to even greater success.”

The search committee, chaired by Carlos A. Duart, vice chair of the FIU Board of Trustees, worked with a search firm to identify, recruit and interview candidates. After a thorough review and interview process, the Presidential Search Committee selected three finalists for recommendation to the FIU Board of Trustees. The three finalists included a sitting president and sitting provost at other institutions, as well as Nuñez.

The two other finalists chose not to continue to the final phase of the process unless they were named the sole final candidate. The committee unanimously agreed to move Nuñez forward as its sole finalist for consideration by the FIU Board of Trustees, citing her proven record of leadership and unique qualifications.

“Since stepping into this role in February, and guided by FIU’s strategic plan, Experience Impact 2030, President-Designate Nuñez has engaged tirelessly and enthusiastically with students, faculty, staff, and our community. She has focused on improving the student experience, ensuring research excellence, and establishing and strengthening strategic alliances,” Duart said. “FIU is in great hands.”

In May, as part of the search process, Nuñez held public forums to discuss her vision for FIU and answer questions from students, faculty, staff and members of the community. During the forums, Nuñez said she is committed to helping FIU rank among the top 30 public universities in the country by 2030 and will work to improve the student experience and the athletics program. She is also focused on FIU’s future in health care education and research, leveraging FIU’s partnerships with Baptist Health South Florida and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

FIU ranks among the nation’s top 50 public universities, according to the U.S. News and World Report rankings. FIU also has been ranked Florida’s top university by The Wall Street Journal and Washington Monthly. In 2024, FIU also was named a Preeminent State Research University by the Florida Board of Governors, and ranks first among Florida public universities in performance metrics.

FIU among 21 universities recognized for success in advancing science and fostering professional success

Florida International University has been recognized for both advancing research and prioritizing student success in the classroom and in their careers, in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications.

“FIU is one of only 21 universities across the United States that have earned both the R1 – Very High Research designation and the Opportunity Colleges and Universities designation. We have successfully demonstrated that it is possible to be a very high research university and simultaneously create an environment that supports the success of all students and opens doors to career opportunities,” said FIU President Jeanette Nuñez.

The American Council on Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (Carnegie Foundation) recently published a series of updates to the Carnegie Classifications, which are best known for classifying universities according to their level of research activity. In this classification, FIU has been in the top category (R1: Very High Research Activity and Doctoral Production) for the past decade.

The redesigned system includes the newly developed Student Access and Earnings Classification, that measures whether institutions are enrolling and creating opportunities for students in communities the institutions serve and whether students earn competitive wages after they graduate. Among the factors used to measure access is the percentage of Pell Grant recipients at FIU. The university’s most recent data shows that 50.5% percent of FIU’s student undergraduate population received a Pell grant.

Additionally, the Carnegie Classifications now identify institutions within the Student Access and Earnings Classification that can serve as models for studying how campuses can foster student success, designating them as Opportunity Colleges and Universities.

FIU is one of 21 universities across the nation that have an R1 designation and also earned the Opportunity Colleges and Universities designation. In total, FIU now holds four Carnegie classifications.

“The majority of students apply to college with the hope it is a path to opportunity, and the job they’ve dreamt about,” said Timothy F.C. Knowles, president of the Carnegie Foundation. “This work is about ensuring that institutions are recognized when they empower students to reach their goals and succeed.”

Last year FIU earned the Carnegie Elective Classification for Leadership for Public Purpose designation for its exemplary commitment to cultivating leadership skills across the university community and fostering a commitment to tackling some of the greatest challenges of our time. FIU is one of only 25 institutions worldwide to receive this recognition in its inaugural year. Carnegie also classifies FIU as a Community Engaged University.

“This new classification reaffirms our dedication to excellence and impact,” said FIU Provost, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Elizabeth M. Béjar. “We are committed to impactful research and to equipping our graduates as leaders in their fields.”

FIU is also ranked among the top 50 public universities in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, which also ranks the university among the top 25 Best Value Public University and No. 1 in the nation for social mobility. FIU also ranks among the top universities in the nation for return on educational investment.

Since 1973, the Carnegie Classification has served as the gold standard for organizing the landscape of U.S. higher education. The 2025 Institutional Classification updates the historic approach to grouping similar colleges and universities, now organizing institutions by multiple characteristics, including their size, the types of degrees they award, and the fields of study in which students receive their degrees.

The 2025 Student Access and Earnings Classification uses the multidimensional groupings of the 2025 Institutional Classification to evaluate student access and earnings between similar colleges and universities. By evaluating student access and earnings among peer campuses, the classifications aim to foster collaboration and institutional improvement with a focus on how comparable higher education can foster opportunities for student success. The methodology also considers location data for each institution, comparing an institution’s data to the relevant geographical context.

The collaboration, celebrated today at FIU’s Earlene and Albert Dotson Pavilion, brings together South Florida’s top public research university and its leading pediatric hospital to address a shared mission: improve child health outcomes through education, innovation, and clinical excellence.

“This partnership represents a powerful opportunity to innovate, educate and lead in the academic healthcare space,” said Matthew A. Love, president and CEO of Nicklaus Children’s Health System. “Coming together as the leading pediatric hospital and the leading research university in South Florida, the possibilities of changing the healthcare landscape are endless and will reinforce our commitment to provide every child a healthier and brighter future.”

The two organizations plan to increase the number of physicians by expanding graduate medical education programs like residencies and fellowships and help attract highly specialized physicians who will lead groundbreaking research to treat and cure childhood illnesses.

“This partnership unites two cornerstone institutions, FIU as Miami’s public research university and Nicklaus Children’s as the region’s top pediatric hospital, with a shared purpose: to improve the health and well-being of our community’s children,” said Jeanette M. Nuñez, interim president of FIU. “By combining our strengths in education, research, and clinical care, we are creating a pipeline of future physicians and groundbreaking discoveries that will transform pediatric care in South Florida and beyond.”

The collaboration between FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and Nicklaus Children's will help address the anticipated nationwide pediatric physician shortage of nearly 13,000 doctors by 2037, by encouraging medical students to pursue careers in pediatrics, training the next generation of pediatricians, and recruiting world-class experts to live and practice in South Florida.

“We believe that when a public university medical school joins with a children’s hospital, we can do more than educate doctors, we can create cures and train pediatricians who understand our neighbors and their special needs,” said Dr. Juan C. Cendan, dean of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. “Through our shared vision and expertise, we can offer hope to families who may have once been told there was none.”

FIU medical students are already embedded in the pediatric care environment at Nicklaus Children’s. As part of their third-year requirements, all medical students complete a pediatric clerkship at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. On average, about 120 students rotate through the hospital each year, reflecting the college’s full class size.

The announcement was especially meaningful for Dr. Stephanie San Martin.

“FIU has been more than a university to me, it’s been a place of growth, of belonging, of possibility,” she said. “Matching at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital six years ago was a dream come true, and after completing my residency, serving as chief resident, and now finishing a pediatric hospitalist fellowship, I am a proud alumna of FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and soon to be attending physician at Nicklaus Children’s. It’s a full-circle moment that fills me with gratitude and hope.”

FIU will celebrate the graduation of over 5,500 students during spring commencement ceremonies from April 27 to May 1. Among this year’s graduates are exceptional students who are helping shape the future through their bold ideas, relentless dedication, and cutting-edge research.

This year’s graduating class includes trailblazers such as the youngest student ever admitted to FIU Law at just 16 years old; a math student who overcame early academic setbacks — relearning math after low SAT scores — to graduate with a perfect GPA and land a role at Google; and a future family physician who turned personal tragedy into purpose, graduating with top honors and matching at her first-choice residency program.

“Our FIU graduates are inspiring, resilient, and determined,” said FIU Interim President Jeanette Nuñez. “They represent the future, and the future is FIU. Wherever you turn, FIU is making an impact. Our students lead with purpose and passion. Their education has prepared them to achieve success, lead with integrity, and exhibit excellence. We are incredibly proud of all they have accomplished and are certain they will soar to new heights.”

All commencement ceremonies will be held at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center, located at FIU’s Modesto Maidique Campus at 11200 SW 8th St., Miami, 33199.

FIU’s outstanding graduates include:

Karina Keifitz, 16, is graduating from FIU’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education. Keifitz is FIU's youngest graduate this spring – and she’s not slowing down. Driven by a deep curiosity about the human mind and a commitment to justice, she pursued a degree in psychology that bridges her passion for understanding behavior with her dream of practicing law. After earning her associate degree at Broward College, she quickly transitioned to FIU, where she thrived in legal psychology courses and balanced work, mentorship, and academic excellence. Inspired by shows like “Criminal Minds” and a desire to make a difference, she’ll begin her next chapter at FIU Law. Keifitz will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the College of Arts, Sciences & Education on Sunday, April 27, at 11 a.m.

Jordan Dawson, 21, is graduating from FIU’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education. Dawson grew up on a 24-square-mile island in the British Virgin Islands. In 2017, two Category 5 hurricanes impacted his home, destroyed his school, and devastated his country. As he prepared to pursue higher studies, he found his math education was grossly behind, but he was determined to relearn the material. As a result, he raised his math SAT score by nearly 500 points — jumping from the 50th percentile to the 99th. He was proud to have been accepted at FIU, where he earned his degree in mathematics, earned a 4.0 GPA and served as President of the Association of Latino Professionals for America. Dawson is now one of only 45 students worldwide selected for Google’s prestigious Associate Product Manager program. Dawson will receive his Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the College of Arts, Sciences & Education on Sunday, April 27, at 11 a.m.

Roshni Bisoondial, 28, is graduating from FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Her family fled political instability in Guyana when she was 3 years old. Inspired by the doctors who cared for her newborn sister as she fought for her life, Bisoondial knew from a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine. As a first-generation medical student, she excelled — mentoring peers, serving at a free clinic, and editing the student research journal, among other accomplishments. In her final year, tragedy struck: her mother was killed in a car accident, and her father was critically injured. Overnight, she became the head of her household. Despite the devastating loss, she persevered and is graduating among the top students in her class, earning multiple honors, and securing her first-choice residency in family medicine at Northwell Health. Bisoondial will graduate with a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine on Thursday, May 1, at 10 a.m.

FIU Board of Trustees chair Rogelio Tovar will speak at the 11 a.m. ceremony on Sunday, April 27 and at the 10 a.m. ceremony on Thursday, May 1. FIU Trustee Alan Gonzalez will speak at the 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. ceremonies on Monday, April 28. FIU Trustee Chanel T. Rowe will speak at the 10 a.m. ceremony on Wednesday, April 30.

Dr. Herbert A. Wertheim, chairman & CEO of Brain Power Incorporated, FIU trustee emeritus, and founding chairman of the FIU medical school named for him, also will speak at the Thursday ceremony.

FIU’s graduate programs have once again been recognized among the nation’s best, with several ranking in the top 50 among public universities in the United States, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings.

The international business program at FIU Business remains a standout, maintaining its position as the No. 2 public program in the nation for the fifth consecutive year, highlighting the college’s dedication to preparing future business leaders.

Graduate programs in the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work, Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences, College of Law and the College of Engineering and Computing also were in the top 50 among public universities in U.S. News & World Report's 2025-2026 edition of Best Graduate Schools.

Among these, the public affairs program at the Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs ranked No. 35 among public universities, while the Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work also made the list with its public health program ranking No. 36.

The College of Medicine ranked No. 41 for research and No. 43 for its primary care program, while its percentage of graduates practicing in Health Professional Shortage Areas ranked No. 32 among public universities.

The College of Nursing’s master’s degree programs ranked No. 31, while the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program ranked No. 41. Additionally, the occupational therapy program ranked No. 50, and the nursing anesthesia program ranked No. 30.

Nationally, FIU Law continues to excel, earning high marks in multiple specialized areas and showcasing FIU’s commitment to providing skills essential for modern legal practice. Overall, the law school ranked No. 45 among public law schools. The international law program ranked No. 16, while the health care law program earned the No. 44 spot. Additionally, the part-time law program ranked No. 10 and the environmental law program ranked No. 45. A new addition to the rankings, FIU Law’s dispute resolution program debuted at No. 48 among public universities.

The biomedical/bioengineering program at the College of Engineering and Computing also achieved notable recognition, ranking No. 45 among public institutions.

“FIU’s continued rise in these prestigious rankings is a testament to our university’s dedication to excellence in education, research, and impact,” said FIU Provost, Executive Vice President, and Chief Operating Officer Elizabeth M. Béjar. “We are proud to see our programs recognized for their quality, outcomes, rigor and transformative significance for our faculty, students and our South Florida community and beyond.”

These new rankings join FIU’s recent recognition in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, where several programs ranked in the top 50. Together, they add to FIU’s growing list of accomplishments, solidifying the university’s position as a leader in public higher education.

Science March Madness: FIU health researchers make it to the championship round

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday announced $2 million in funding from the Casey DeSantis Florida Cancer Innovation Fund, to increase patients’ access to FIU cancer researcher Diana Azzam’s innovative functional precision medicine treatment approach.

Azzam, a researcher in the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work, developed a functional precision medicine approach that targets cancer by combining genetic testing with testing of individual drugs on tumor samples. The results of this innovative method are used by oncologists to guide treatment. According to the results of a clinical study published last year in Nature Medicine, 83% of patients treated with Azzam’s method showed improvement. Azzam is currently carrying out personalized cancer treatment clinical trials for both children and adults.

The $2 million grant to First Ascent Biomedical, the company that Azzam co-founded to bring this technology to market, is part of a larger commitment to cancer research announced on Friday.

The funding will generate critical clinical data to support Food and Drug Administration approval of highly individualized treatment planning technologies that integrate Azzam’s functional precision medicine platform with artificial intelligence to accelerate insurance coverage and nationwide adoption.

“Dr. Azzam’s group is demonstrating that functional precision medicine is the future of health care,” said FIU Interim President Jeanette Nuñez. “Today’s investment, announced by Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis, will accelerate the process to make this technology available to cancer patients who need it the most.”

Approximately 2 million people are diagnosed with cancer in the United States each year, according to the National Cancer Institute. Nearly 30 percent (more than 600,000) are expected to die.

Friday’s announcement adds to state funding Azzam’s lab has received for her research, including a $2 million appropriation from the State of Florida in 2022 and, prior to that, $700,000 from the Florida Department of Health through the Live Like Bella Pediatric Cancer Research Initiative.

“The private-public partnership between FIU and First Ascent is a powerful testament to how the state of Florida is catalyzing innovations that have potential for saving lives,” Azzam said.

This groundbreaking program aims to position FIU at the forefront of the rapidly growing location-based entertainment (LBE) industry, creating new opportunities for education, hands-on learning and industry partnerships to prepare students for careers in immersive entertainment.

Location-based entertainment (LBE) refers to interactive, immersive experiences that engage audiences both physically and digitally. This technology is often found in theme parks, immersive theaters, esports arenas, interactive museums, and large-scale events. From AI-driven art installations to food and wine festivals that integrate digital engagement, LBE continues to transform how audiences interact with their surroundings.

Supported by Tom Dolan from the Dolan Family Foundation, D.R.E.A.M.S. will be housed within the FIU School of Communication’s Global Strategic Communication program, part of the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA). Florida International University’s hospitality program has been ranked fourth among public universities in the nation, according to the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

“FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management continues to be recognized as a leader in hospitality and tourism management education thanks to our bold, transformative vision and innovative approach to student success and experiential learning opportunities that give our students a head start in the hospitality industry and interaction with top industry leaders well before graduation,” said Michael Cheng, Chaplin School dean and professor.

It is among several FIU programs that ranked in the top 50 among U.S. public universities. The other top programs were: politics, ranked 18-23; architecture and built environment, ranked 22-23; accounting and finance, ranked 23-26; business and management studies, ranked 23-26; electrical engineering, ranked 29-34; environmental sciences, ranked 34-38; sociology, ranked 34-40; computer science and information systems ranked 45-50, medicine, ranked 44-49, psychology ranked 43-48; education, ranked 40-47; and economics and econometrics, ranked 45-49.

QS rankings score universities on five broad faculty areas, which are arts and humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences, natural sciences, and social sciences and management.

“We are proud of our QS rankings and especially pleased that QS recognized FIU’s depth and breadth, as we have top 50 programs ranked in each of the five broad faculty areas,” said Provost, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Elizabeth M. Béjar.

The 2025 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject provides independent comparative analysis on the performance of more than 18,300 individual university programs, taken by students at more than 1,700 universities.

QS uses five key metrics to compile the subject rankings. Reputation indicators are based on the responses of more than 240,000 employers and academics to QS surveys while Citations per Paper and H-Index measure research impact and productivity. International Research Network (IRN) is used to assess cross-border research collaboration.

Nicklaus Children's Health System and Florida International University, through its Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, announced a strategic affiliation to create the region's only pediatric academic hospital that will enhance expert pediatric medicine in South Florida and beyond. This collaboration will expand physician training, research, and patient care, improving the health of children in South Florida and beyond.

“Nicklaus and FIU have had a long-standing relationship in training our medical students. Now, we will work together to improve access and quality of care for the children in our community and those from outside communities who travel here for life-saving care,” said Dr. Juan C. Cendan, College of Medicine dean and senior vice president for health affairs.

Nicklaus Children's Hospital, South Florida's only specialty licensed children's hospital, will become the exclusive pediatric teaching hospital for FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, and members of the Nicklaus Children's Pediatric Specialists, the health system's medical group practice, will be eligible to serve as faculty in the college's Department of Pediatrics.

Together, the two cornerstone institutions will enhance pediatric education for medical students, increase the number of physicians by expanding graduate medical education programs like residencies and fellowships, and help attract highly specialized physicians who will lead groundbreaking research to treat and cure childhood illnesses.

"As the only specialty licensed children's hospital and the leading pediatric health system in the region, families seek our expert care for the most complex medical conditions," said Matthew A. Love, president and CEO of Nicklaus Children's Health System. "Nicklaus Children's is home to the largest pediatric teaching program in the southeast United States. Together with FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, we will continue to help address the expected nationwide physician shortage. This affiliation represents our joint commitment to continue investing and elevating pediatric healthcare to the benefit of the children and families we serve not only here in South Florida, but across our great state and nation by ensuring they will continue to have access to the best doctors, treatments and care available."

The collaboration between FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and Nicklaus Children's will help address the anticipated nationwide pediatric physician shortage of nearly 13,000 doctors by 2037, by encouraging medical students to pursue careers in pediatrics, training the next generation of pediatricians, and recruiting world-class experts to live and practice in South Florida.

A master affiliation agreement between the two organizations will be finalized in a few weeks.

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum-FIU announces the opening of Diego Alejandro Waisman: Sunset Colonies, a solo exhibition presenting poignant photographs captured by the titular artist that investigate how urban development has impacted South Florida’s mobile home communities.

Waisman is a Buenos Aires-born, Miami-based visual artist who earned a Master of Fine Arts from FIU and was a former student member of the Frost Art Museum’s advisory council. Known for exploring social and economic issues, exile, family, identity, and origins in his work, Waisman has now turned his focus to the vulnerabilities of South Florida’s mobile home communities. In this exhibition, he examines the challenges these residents face amid rapid urban transformation and the persistent threat of economic displacement.

The works presented in Sunset Colonies are photographs mostly from the Frost Art Museum’s collection and were captured over the span of seven years. These images pose pressing questions about the invisibility of mobile home communities, their histories, and their uncertain futures amidst the housing affordability crisis. At the same time, they highlight the resilience and strength of individuals whose sense of home balances delicately between memory and an encroaching reality.

"This exhibition represents the heart of our mission—connecting art, education, and community. It highlights the significance of our collection and showcases how an artist, such as Diego Alejandro Waisman, one of our distinguished MFA alumni, can help us reflect on and understand the transformations shaping our city,” said Miriam Machado, interim director of the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU. “We are deeply grateful to the Green Family Foundation for their generosity in making this celebration of Diego’s achievements possible and for supporting how artists and art help us connect with our history, our community, and the world around us.”

“Through his photography, Diego vividly captures Miami’s rapid redevelopment and transforming urban landscape, as well as the impact on this community," added Kimberly Green, President of Green Family Foundation and Co-Founder of Green Space Miami, a community art collective. "It’s encouraging to see this project grow and the documentation of these local communities--originally featured in the 'ChromaTone' show at Green Space Miami--now added to the Frost Art Museum FIU’s collection. This inclusion reflects the museum's mission to engage with local artists and communities through art.”

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum-FIU announces the opening of Path of the Panther, a showcase of the striking work of National Geographic Explorer and conservation photographer Carlton Ward Jr. This exhibition celebrates the Florida panther as a symbol of resilience, hope, and a call to action for the preservation of Florida’s natural heritage.

Florida’s state animal and FIU’s mascot, the Florida panther, stands as the last big cat surviving east of the Mississippi River. Once nearly extinct with fewer than 20 panthers remaining in the 1980s, the species has rebounded to nearly 200 today due to dedicated conservation efforts. However, the biggest obstacle to the panther’s continued recovery is access to enough of its historic territory throughout Florida and adjoining states.

Path of the Panther is the culmination of Carlton Ward’s six-year endeavor to document the panther’s life, environment, and journey through the Florida Wildlife Corridor. This network of public and private land connects the panther’s current range in South Florida to suitable habitat throughout the state and beyond. Ward has spent nearly two decades advocating for the Florida Wildlife Corridor and in 2015 moved his Airstream trailer to the Florida Everglades to launch this project. The images on view in this exhibition were captured using camera traps during Ward’s extensive time in the Everglades and are also featured in the April 2021 issue of National Geographic Magazine and the new National Geographic book of the same title.

"Inspired by FIU researchers and scientists’ enduring commitment to the survival of the Florida panther, the Frost Art Museum is proud to present Path of the Panther. Through the lens of National Geographic photographer Carlton Ward Jr., this remarkable exhibition raises awareness of the panther’s plight and compels us to reflect on our shared responsibility to protect the Everglades and its inhabitants,” said Miriam Machado, interim director of the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU. “The Florida panther, a powerful symbol of resilience and strength, holds a special connection to FIU as our university mascot. This exhibition not only highlights the beauty and perseverance of these endangered creatures but also serves as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of all living things and the critical role we play in preserving the delicate balance of our ecosystems.”
