Dear members of the university community,

Please join me in congratulating former Florida Senator Marco Rubio on his confirmation to be our nation’s 72nd Secretary of State.

Secretary Rubio, who taught at FIU for two decades, now holds the highest position by an FIU faculty, administrator, or alumnus in any U.S. presidential administration. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a 99-0 vote, a testament to his reputation as a leader and statesman.

Secretary Rubio is an esteemed member of the FIU family. During his years as a state legislator and U.S. Senator, he supported and advocated for our students and researchers. In addition, in the classroom as a senior fellow in the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, he shared his knowledge of government, diplomacy, and politics with our students through classes he co-taught with professors Dario Moreno and Sara Moats. Undoubtedly, Secretary Rubio has inspired new generations of public servants.

I am confident that Secretary Rubio will be an excellent secretary of state and will serve and represent our nation on the international stage with honor and integrity.

Sincerely,

Kenneth A. Jessell
President
