Back in session and ready to go: six reminders for returning students

August 24, 2026 at 9:00am

The excitement of a new school year has descended upon campus as classes and festivities kick off. And while first-time Panthers are receiving plenty of advice today to get them started on the right foot, even those returning to campus with previous experience can use a few reminders. Keep the following on your radar this week.

Panthers’ F1RST NIGHT: The university’s biggest tradition takes place tonight, and everyone is invited. Pitbull Stadium at MMC comes alive as the entire FIU community joins FIU's president and other leaders for a special celebration that includes giveaways, music and fireworks. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Drop/Add deadline: The official date for dropping a course, adding a course or withdrawing from the university without incurring costs associated with tuition and fees is Thursday, Aug. 27. Complete and confirm your changes before midnight at the MyFIU student portal.

Meal plans: FIU offers options that fit every schedule and budget. Meal plans can be purchased online, charged to a student account/financial aid via the student portal or secured in-person through the meal plan office in GC (near the Pit).

Panther football: Football games and other campus athletic events offer a prime opportunity to meet up with friends and share school spirit. (Students, simply present your One Card ID for admission.) The gridiron home opener take place on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Pitbull Stadium at MMC and should be on everybody’s calendar. Separately, students who would like to attend the season opening away game on Saturday, Sept. 5., should register their interest. Food, transportation, a game ticket and more will be included in a special package available for a nominal fee.

Parking and transportation: Students driving to campus and residential students keeping a car in a garage or lot should ensure their current license plate is linked to a virtual parking permit by signing into their online FIU parking account using their university credentials. This is especially important for those bringing a car to campus for the first time or whose plate may have changed recently. And anyone needing to go between FIU locations – the two campuses and the Engineering Center – can opt to utilize free university transportation services.

Nomofomo: FIU keeps students in the know with a text alert system that points users to free swag, gear and food. Items are usually exclusive editions and available in limited quantities, so interested Panthers should sign up today by texting Nomofomo to 31002.
