The promising news this morning is that the forecast cone continues to track north and east. However, Dorian is a catastrophic storm and we must remain vigilant because of past experience with hurricanes.

We must remember the lessons of Hurricane Charley, which “wobbled” and hit the Florida west coast 70 miles south of its expected landfall in August of 2004.

Please continue to pay close attention to updates from the National Hurricane Center and the news media.

FIU will close at noon on Sunday, Sept. 1. Classes are canceled through the Labor Day weekend.

The university will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so.

In the coming days, please look for official university communication through email and on social media channels regarding operations next week.

Please make good use of this time to prepare and take responsibility for the safety of yourself and your family.

 Stay safe.
