FIU unveils new flexible work arrangement policy

In an era of groundbreaking technological sophistication, the future of 21st-century work is pointing toward increased hybrid and remote environments. In fact, FIU’s Next Horizon strategic plan calls for Panthers to optimize their resources and be responsible stewards by establishing a flexible workforce structure in support of efficiency, productivity and retention.

When the world went remote during COVID-19, employers and employees around the globe took notice of the experience. Following the university’s full in-person return to campuses, FIU asked faculty and staff to take a survey to gauge the community’s interest and needs for flexible work options. Administrators said the survey results were clear: Panthers were overwhelmingly interested in a hybrid work option, where they could work both in-person and remotely.

Fueled by these responses, FIU created a new flexible work arrangement policy, which features various options, including a hybrid model. During a town hall on Dec. 16, university administrators unveiled the policy to an in-person audience at MMC’s Graham Center Ballrooms and about 1,200 virtual attendees.

“We are taking bold steps together to continue to immerse ourselves into the future of work,” said El pagnier K. Hudson, senior vice president of human resources and vice provost for diversity, equity and inclusion. “Our people are everything. Our metrics [successes] don’t happen by themselves. It’s our people who make it happen. It is our privilege to be here to unveil the Agile Workforce Model, which reflects enhancements to what used to be the Flexible Work Policy, and we've done that with you in mind. Today marks an incredible achievement for our FIU.”

Hudson added that the progressive work practices in the policy reflect the needs of today's workforce. "The future is here and we are already embracing it," she said.

The policy will be effective beginning Jan. 1, 2022.
