June 2021 in photos: No. 1 in Florida, Juneteenth and Poincianas in bloom

It was a month of "firsts" for FIU. The university earned the No. 1 spot in Florida, according to the Board of Governors' performance-based funding scores—and a new annual tradition was started when the university held its first-ever Juneteenth Celebration to honor freedom and educate people about African American history. FIU earned the highest score among public universities in the state, according to the Florida Board of Governors performance-based funding scores. Sneak peek: Oscar Negret of the Division of Strategic Communications, Government and External Affairs designed a billboard to share the news with the community that will be going up around town soon.

The university is doubling the number of in-person classes from Spring 2021 to Fall 2021, signaling a return to pre-pandemic learning.

A man with an uncanny ability to connect with people across a broad spectrum, Albert Dotson Sr. was a giant in the FIU community. Check out our full story about his memorial here.

Capoeira is a martial art that melds together elements of dance kicks and music. Its practice dates back to the 16th century in Brazil, where African American slaves would practice the dance as a way to disguise the fact that they were learning to fight. The art form is still practiced mostly within the South American country, although at FIU's recent Juneteenth celebration, Alemão (left) and Dianora (right) from the group Capoeira Superação Arts taught holiday attendees about the art form.
