March 2021 in photos: Commencement caravan, Relay For Life and Match Day

The university came together with cheer to celebrate the achievements of Panthers this month. Here are some of our favorite photos from March, as captured by FIU photographers Margi Rentis, Carl Frederick-Francois, Doug Garland and Vince Rives.

At the caravan, mechanical engineering undergrad Sebastian Garcia had a special tassel made to honor his grandma who recently passed. He says: “My grandma was always proud of me studying to become an engineer, knowing in the back of her mind that her grandson does not like studying. She highly anticipated my graduation, though life happens. At this moment all I can do is bring her along for the ride for her to see out of my eyes what a wonderful day this is. Life is short, live as if today was your last and never hold anything back.”

Every year, FIU's Relay for Life comes together to rally support for the fight against cancer. This year's edition was held as a hybrid event. It raised more than $49,000. Photo by Carl Frederick-Francois.

More than 150 individuals gathered in-person for Relay. Attendees had the option to partake in the ceremony from socially distanced sitting pods or from the comfort of their vehicles via tuning into a live stream. Check out our event recap here.
