FIU selects Thornton Construction Company Inc. to launch CasaCuba’s construction phase
FIU has selected Thornton Construction Company Inc. to provide construction services for FIU CasaCuba’s facility on the university’s main campus.
CasaCuba is FIU’s emerging cultural center and think tank focused on the preservation and celebration of Cuban heritage and the study of Cuban affairs.
FIU CasaCuba has received significant philanthropic support from major foundations, corporations, prominent Cuban-American families and community leaders. Early major grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) financed the project’s design phase, led by René González Architects.
“We are very excited to launch the construction phase of CasaCuba,” said Agustín Arellano, Sr., chairman of FIU CasaCuba’s Board of Advisors. “This is an important event that brings us much closer to the inauguration of our iconic facility, and that was made possible thanks to the support the project has received in our community.”
FIU CasaCuba aspires to be the preeminent institution devoted to Cuban culture. Its 57,000-square-foot facility will feature a state-of-the-art venue for events and performances, exhibition galleries, classrooms, co-working spaces, a café and a plaza. The center will integrate the latest technologies to enable interactive and digital experiences across the space, bringing to life Cuban heritage and history. FIU CasaCuba also will house the university’s Cuban Research Institute (CRI) and promote engaging discussions that will bring together top scholars, policymakers, business executives, artists, and civic leaders from around the globe.
Established in 1998, Thornton Construction Company Inc. is an industry leader in South Florida. Thornton and its team have completed numerous civic projects for iconic landmarks such as the Freedom Tower, Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, and the Young At Art Museum. Thornton’s portfolio also includes significant projects for higher education institutions, including the FIU Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs II.
“The construction of CasaCuba is more than just another project for Thornton Construction. This partnership means we can help our children understand the struggles of so many Cubans as they fled from their native land,” said the company’s executive vice president, Dagoberto Diaz. “The facility will display Cuba’s culture, giving our community and younger generations an accessible way to learn about the roots of so many of us in South Florida.”
