A message from the President on the conflict in Israel and Gaza

October 27, 2023 at 8:00am

The following message was shared with the FIU community on October 27.

Dear FIU family,

These last three weeks have been full of concern and outrage given the conflict in Israel and Gaza. For many in our community, this painful situation is personal, with family and friends who are directly impacted.

I have heard from so many members of our university community who are hurting. I am grateful that you have reached out and shared your perspective about this difficult situation. As a university community – a community of learning – we must lean on each other for support. As a united community, we must remain determined to foster understanding so that we may be part of creating a better world.

I want to share with you that I have signed onto a statement along with other higher education leaders. At FIU, we stand united with Israelis, Palestinians and all people who stand firmly against Hamas and terrorism in all its forms.

The safety and welfare of our entire Panther family are paramount. Our university promotes a culturally diverse and inclusive working and learning environment where current and prospective faculty, staff, and students are valued for their individuality. If any student, employee, visitor, or applicant has a good faith belief that they have been discriminated against or harassed based on age, color, disability, gender, marital status, ethnic or national origin, race, religion, retaliation, sex or any other protected category, the Office of Civil Rights Compliance and Accessibility (CRCA) encourages them to report the incident. You are also encouraged to immediately contact FIU Police at 305-348-5911 if you feel threatened or in danger, or at 305-348-2626 for non-emergencies.

Please remember that FIU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) are available to provide support to students seeking counseling during difficult times. Students may contact CAPS at 305-348-2277. Faculty and staff who seek support are encouraged to reach out to the Office of Employee Assistance at 305-348-2469.

Sincerely,
