Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU opens new exhibitions exploring the Pattern and Decoration Movement
Two exhibitions highlight an art movement defined by diverse cultural influences, upending the traditional hierarchy of visual art.
The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU launches its fall program with the opening of two exhibitions featuring art and artists affiliated with the Pattern and Decoration (P&D) movement from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s.
Presented in collaboration with the Tampa Museum of Art, Embellish Me: Works from the Collection of Norma Canelas Roth and William Roth features vivid pattern paintings and complex fiber works that defined the P&D movement. In contrast to mainstream movements like Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptualism, P&D set itself apart by integrating ornamental patterns, celebrating decorative arts, and challenging the traditional hierarchy of art.
On view through Jan. 7, 2024, Embellish Me examines how artists embraced excess and rejected restrained formality. Visitors can hear from featured artists and learn more about each artist’s practice by scanning QR codes throughout the galleries.
This exhibition honors Norma Canelas Roth (1943–2022), who, with her husband William, collected a wide range of artists identified with the P&D movement.
“Norma’s passion for art, especially works that often went against the mainstream, is reflected in the significant collection of P&D works we amassed over the years. We are grateful to the Frost Art Museum for the opportunity to share her collection and love for this art with the community,” said William Roth, husband of Norma Canelas Roth.
On view through Dec. 10, 2023, the Frost Art Museum also presents To Recognize a Pattern, an exhibition that complements Embellish Me with contemporary art by Mark Fleuridor, Ashnide Jean-Baptiste, and Vickie Pierre. These Florida-based artists create works that incorporate pattern, design, and embrace the handmade.
“It is our great privilege to exhibit the Roth collection of P&D works at the Frost. Not only was this a movement that questioned assumptions about what makes great art, collectors including the Roths demonstrated their support by valuing artists working outside the major artistic trends,” said Jordana Pomeroy, director of the Frost Art Museum. “Pattern and Decoration integrated arts from different cultures welcoming ideas and techniques rooted in ancient traditions. Contemporary artists identify with this holistic embrace, which resounds in our accompanying exhibition To Recognize a Pattern.”
The Frost will host an opening ceremony for all its fall exhibitions on Oct. 7, 2023, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. This free event is open to the public and takes place at the Frost Art Museum, located at 10975 SW 17 St.
