FIU study challenges leading explanation for why galaxies stop forming stars

For decades, astronomers have cast galaxy mergers as the universe’s ultimate relationship drama: two galaxies collide, chaos erupts, black holes awaken and star formation comes to a screeching halt. Upending this long-held belief, new research from Florida International University suggests most galaxies don’t “die” in spectacular cosmic pileups after all.

Understanding why galaxies stop forming stars is one of the biggest questions in galaxy evolution because it helps scientists explain how galaxies change over billions of years. The researchers found galaxy mergers are neither necessary nor sufficient to stop galaxies from forming new stars — a process astronomers call quenching. Instead, the findings suggest slower internal processes play a much larger role than galaxy mergers in shutting down star formation, according to Camilo Casimiro, an FIU Physics graduate student and lead author of the study that was published recently in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

“I’ve always been fascinated by galaxy evolution and the question of why some galaxies continue forming stars while others stop completely,” Casimiro said.

For decades, astronomers have viewed galaxy mergers as one of the leading explanations for why otherwise active galaxies eventually stop forming new stars. The researchers set out to test a longstanding idea in astronomy known as the “merger-quasar-quench” paradigm. The theory proposes that when galaxies collide, the interaction funnels huge amounts of gas toward the galaxies’ centers, fueling supermassive black holes. Those black holes then unleash enormous amounts of energy, heating or expelling the gas needed to form stars.

It’s a dramatic theory — and one that has shaped astrophysics research for decades. Traditionally, astronomers have looked for super bright quasars, spectacular black hole outbursts and dramatic events inside a galaxy’s center, according to Asa Bluck, assistant professor of Physics, Casimiro’s advisor and coauthor of the study. However, he says what really matters is the total energy a black hole releases over billions of years — even if it’s not flashy or particularly spectacular.

The research team analyzed more than 11,000 simulated galaxies using IllustrisTNG, one of the world’s most advanced cosmological simulations. The simulation allows scientists to track billions of years of cosmic history, following how galaxies grow, collide, feed their central black holes and eventually stop forming stars. If galaxy mergers truly drove quenching, researchers expected to see galaxies stopping star formation soon after those collisions. Instead, they found that rarely happened. Only about 3% of major galaxy mergers were followed by quenching within a billion years, according to the research.

Even when researchers included all mergers — large and small — only about 12% were associated with galaxies shutting down star formation. Perhaps even more surprising, most galaxies that stopped forming stars showed no evidence of a recent merger at all.

The research is a bold endeavor for Casimiro’s first-ever peer-reviewed paper.

“Challenging a long-standing idea in galaxy evolution is something I never expected to be doing so early in my career,” he said.

“At the same time, I have a great deal of trust in my advisor and in the scientific process itself. One of the most important parts of science is being willing to test even widely accepted ideas against new data and better simulations.”

The findings don't answer what ultimately causes galaxies to stop forming stars, but they suggest astronomers may need to look beyond dramatic collisions to explain one of galaxy evolution's biggest mysteries.

Instead of asking what dramatic event ended a galaxy’s life, Casimiro says scientists may need to focus on what quietly keeps it from reigniting. It’s a shift in thinking that shows change, even on the largest scales imaginable, doesn’t usually come from a single catastrophic event — but rather from long, gradual shifts that build over time. The findings suggest that one of astronomy's biggest questions may have a less dramatic answer than scientists have long believed.

This move is designed to expand programming, strengthen fundraising, deepen community engagement, increase philanthropic opportunities and position the institution for long-term growth while preserving its longstanding partnership and academic affiliation with FIU.

The Jewish Museum of Florida gifted the museum to FIU in 2012, creating opportunities for collaboration in scholarship, education and programming. Over the past decade, both organizations have evolved, prompting leaders to explore a structure that would best support their respective missions while preserving a continued partnership.

As an independent organization, the museum will have its own leadership team and board of directors, direct access to philanthropic support and an operational structure tailored to its mission as a cultural institution. It strengthens the JMOF’s mission of collecting, preserving and sharing the history and stories of Jewish life in Florida and recognizing the significant and meaningful contributions of the Jewish people across the state and country.

“Our board is excited about this next chapter,” said Ira D. Giller, chair of the board of the Jewish Museum of Florida. “FIU has been an important partner, and we are proud of what we have accomplished together. This transition gives us greater flexibility to pursue new opportunities, strengthen community connections and advance the museum’s mission for generations to come.”

As part of the agreement, all assets associated with JMOF will remain dedicated to supporting the museum’s mission and ongoing operations.

The affiliation between FIU and JMOF will continue to create opportunities for collaboration through FIU’s Global Jewish Studies Program in the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs and other academic initiatives. Students, faculty, and researchers will continue to benefit from educational programming, experiential learning opportunities and scholarly research connected to the museum.

“This agreement reflects our shared belief that the museum’s future is best served through independent leadership and governance,” said FIU President Jeanette M. Nuñez. “We are pleased to support a structure that positions the museum for continued success while preserving a strong partnership that benefits our students, faculty and broader community.”

Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner welcomed the agreement, noting the museum’s longstanding importance to the city’s cultural landscape.

Florida International University research assistant professor Mark Bond has been selected as a lead scientist for the maiden voyage of REV, one of the world's most advanced research vessels dedicated to ocean science and conservation. Bond will supervise research for the Heart of the Caribbean expedition, which will gather critical scientific data needed to support the creation of the Atlantic Ocean's first multinational marine protected area, spanning waters connected to Haiti, Jamaica and throughout the region.

The expedition is one of 10 partner-led missions chosen by parent organization REV Ocean for the vessel's inaugural Maiden Voyage Science Program, which will take place from May 2027 through September 2028. FIU's Institute of Environment serves as a key scientific partner in the initiative, with Bond leading a team of scientists from the Caribbean Biological Corridor, Wildlife Conservation Society and Bimini Biological Field Station to advance research and conservation planning in one of the least-explored regions of the Caribbean.

"The Heart of the Caribbean Expedition brings together scientists, conservation practitioners, technical specialists and government representatives from across the Caribbean region and beyond,” Bond said. “We cannot protect what we do not understand, and this expedition represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to explore and better understand one of the Caribbean's critically important marine ecosystems.”

Scheduled for May and June 2028, the Heart of the Caribbean expedition will investigate deep-sea ecosystems, biodiversity, oceanographic processes and ecological connectivity across the region. Scientists will use REV's advanced capabilities to explore seamounts and deep-ocean habitats at depths of up to 5,700 meters, many of which have never been systematically surveyed.

Researchers will focus on sharks and rays, marine mammals, sea turtles, seabirds and deep-sea communities while collecting environmental DNA, oceanographic and habitat mapping data. The findings will help identify ecologically significant areas and inform future marine spatial planning and conservation efforts throughout the Caribbean.

The Heart of the Caribbean mission also aligns with global efforts to protect 30 percent of the world's oceans by 2030. Beyond its scientific objectives, the expedition will provide training and technology-transfer opportunities for Caribbean researchers and resource managers.

REV Ocean announced the Maiden Voyage Science Program during the 2026 Our Ocean Conference in Kenya this week. The vessel's inaugural research season will span the South Atlantic, Caribbean, Sargasso Sea and Eastern Tropical Pacific, supporting marine science, conservation and policy development through partnerships with leading institutions around the world.

"FIU is committed to developing the science that helps build a more resilient future,” said Mike Heithaus, FIU vice provost of environmental resilience. "The challenges facing our oceans don't stop at national boundaries, and neither can the solutions. FIU is proud to help lead international efforts that advance ocean conservation, strengthen regional resilience and ensure future generations benefit from healthy, thriving marine ecosystems."

At 195 meters (approximately 640 feet), REV is equipped with nine laboratories, advanced oceanographic instruments and deep-sea vehicles capable of reaching depths of up to 6,000 meters. Its onboard submersible and remotely operated vehicle are outfitted with 4K cameras, sensors and sampling equipment for studying marine life and seafloor ecosystems. High-speed satellite connectivity enables live communication and streaming from the ship, including from deep beneath the ocean's surface, allowing scientists to explore and sample some of the most remote parts of the ocean.

All 10 missions in the maiden voyage will advance ocean science and support marine protection and policy work, while completing the final stage of operational validation before REV transitions to a longer-term open-access research model. All data from the science program will be shared through the Ocean Data Platform and other relevant platforms, to ensure findings remain accessible to partners, policymakers and researchers after each mission ends.

Nationally recognized authority in coastal engineering and resilience Jack Puleo has been appointed dean of Florida International University's College of Engineering and Computing.

Puleo joined FIU in December 2025 and will continue to serve as associate vice president of research for Strategic Initiatives in Coastal Engineering and Resilience in the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED).

Puleo brings an extensive record of scholarship, federal service and academic leadership to the role. His research on coastal processes, hydrodynamics and sediment transport has advanced the national understanding of nearshore dynamics, wave run-up and nature-based shoreline resilience. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and secured more than $30 million in sponsored research support across more than 65 projects funded by major federal agencies.

“The FIU College of Engineering and Computing sits at a remarkable intersection of disciplines: coastal resilience, cybersecurity, AI, quantum science, biomedical engineering,” Puleo said. “It is a genuine honor to serve as dean, and I look forward to working alongside our faculty, staff, students and partners to push that work further.”

Puleo has already begun to engage industry and government on the potential for undergraduate and graduate degree programs in coastal engineering and resilience at FIU.

“Jack Puleo is a nationally recognized scholar and proven academic leader whose work in coastal engineering and resilience aligns seamlessly with our mission and Florida’s unique needs,” said Elizabeth M. Béjar, provost, executive vice president and chief operating officer. “His record of impactful research, commitment to student success and experience leading complex, interdisciplinary initiatives position him to advance the College of Engineering and Computing’s momentum and elevate its role in addressing the most pressing challenges facing our communities and the world.”

FIU's College of Engineering and Computing is home to the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences, one of the largest computing schools in the nation, and the Wall of Wind, a unique wind testing facility capable of simulating Category 5 hurricane conditions. The college's research enterprise includes strong collaborations with units such as FIU's Institute of Environment on coastal and stormwater challenges and the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine on cardiovascular, biomedical and neural engineering breakthroughs.

Prior to joining FIU, Puleo served as chair of the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware, where he also directed the Center for Applied Coastal Research. His national service includes appointments as a special government employee for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Board of Coastal Engineering Research and as a member of the USCRP Decadal Steering Committee on Coastal Processes.

Puleo earned bachelor's degrees from Humboldt State University and a master's degree from Oregon State University. He spent six years as a research oceanographer at the Naval Research Laboratory before completing his Ph.D. at the University of Florida.

Puleo succeeds Inés Triay, who served as interim dean since October 2023.

Florida International University is expanding access to high-impact healthcare careers with the launch of a new major in Music Therapy. The program positions FIU among only four universities in Florida offering this major.

Offered through the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts, the major prepares students to become Board-Certified Music Therapists (MT-BC) through intensive musical training and supervised clinical practice. Applications are now open for the inaugural cohort, which will begin in Fall 2026.

Music therapy is one of the fastest-growing allied health professions, with credentialed practitioners working in hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, mental health facilities and community agencies. In these settings, it has been shown to reduce anxiety, depression and pain while improving cognitive, motor and social skills in patients with neurological disorders, dementia and severe mental illness.

“This marks a significant milestone for FIU and for music therapy education in South Florida,” said Linda M. Lathroum, director of FIU’s Music Therapy program. “Students will receive rigorous artistic training alongside extensive clinical experience, equipping them to serve diverse communities through evidence-based care that meets their needs.”

Florida International University and Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (FIU Medicine) today announced a landmark $30 million gift from philanthropists Helen and Jacob Shaham.

In recognition of their generosity, the academic medical center currently under construction on FIU’s main campus, in partnership with Baptist Health South Florida (Baptist Health), will be named the Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center.

“We’re proud to support FIU’s College of Medicine and the role it plays in our community,” said Helen and Jacob Shaham. “Expanding access to education and preparing the next generation of physicians is a meaningful investment of the future of South Florida and beyond.”

Made possible through critical investment and support from the Florida Legislature – which has allocated more than $158 million to date – FIU Medicine is partnering with Baptist Health, which will be the care provider and will manage the center’s operations. The seven-story facility, slated to open in 2028, will feature academic learning spaces and outpatient multi-specialty services, including same-day surgery and diagnostic imaging. These services will make it easier for the community to access high-quality outpatient care while helping train the next generation of physicians at a time when the U.S. faces a growing doctor shortage.

The new rankings highlight FIU’s strengths across business, law, public affairs and health sciences, reinforcing its position as a leading research university and a top destination for graduate education.

Florida International University and technology start-up Tekmara are teaming up to accelerate the evolution of underwater habitats, combining advanced artificial intelligence (AI), integrated data solutions, and marine robotics to protect and conserve the world’s oceans.

FIU Aquarius, the world’s only underwater research laboratory, will host Tekmara’s sensor technology and AI-powered monitoring systems, allowing scientists to move beyond data collection and toward intelligent, real-time environmental monitoring.

FIU Aquarius is strategically located 60 feet below the ocean surface in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, making it the ideal facility for this new era in ocean science. FIU is the lead university research partner for the sanctuary and a global leader in ocean research, conservation and resilience. The collaboration with Tekmara is part of the future of Aquarius and underwater research habitats, which includes the development of Aquarius 2, as well as modular habitats that can be deployed all across the world.

“This project brings together two of FIU’s priorities to help grow ocean exploration: environmental research and technology,” said FIU President Jeanette M. Nuñez. “What scientists learn at the Medina Aquarius Program will prove pivotal for the future of Florida’s tourism and economy. FIU will continue to lead the way in marine conservation and research.”

FIU scientists and Tekmara technicians will develop and test autonomous systems, data platforms and AI algorithms in the environment in and around FIU Aquarius. The systems are designed to autonomously detect anomalies like pollution sources or oxygen depletion, learn from the ocean environment, and provide real-time solutions. They will largely be powered by renewable energy sources including solar and marine renewable energy.

As part of this partnership, FIU will be “cutting the cord,” and use wireless data storage and transmission. The end result will be a new generation smart lab located on the seafloor, continuously delivering scientific insights that are critical to global marine health and resilience.

“FIU Aquarius has long been a global asset for advancing scientific exploration, research and discovery,” said Mike Heithaus, FIU Vice Provost of Environmental Resilience and marine ecologist. “With these new advances, our habitat is becoming more efficient and more equipped to support the amazing work being done by FIU scientists, as well as scientists and industry partners from around the world.”

Knowledge gained from the AI-enabled systems will be incorporated into FIU’s Medina Aquarius Program, which is dedicated to research and education on the world’s marine ecosystems. It will help transform onsite training programs for scientists and astronauts that utilize the habitat’s extreme environment and even support the development of new technologies for ocean conservation.

The advanced systems will also support improved safety and security for teams conducting missions in the habitat and for FIU Aquarius itself. Detecting and tracking surface vessels, the systems will help ensure compliance within the protected Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and notify enforcement officials of unauthorized activities.

“FIU is a fantastic partner in the pursuit of making marine protected areas secure,” said Tekmara founder Todd Kleperis. “The potential exists to take what we’re doing here at FIU Aquarius and expand into other parts of the world.”

This collaboration comes at a pivotal time for the ocean technology sector. Thanks to the leadership and support of Congressmen Mario-Diaz Balart and Carlos A. Gimenez, FIU was awarded $1 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the College of Arts, Sciences and Education’s Medina Aquarius Program instrumentation project. These funds will be used to add new oceanographic instrumentation and communications capabilities. The instrumentation will establish a uniquely capable observation system at Aquarius Reef Base and will help scientists understand the conditions that drive the health of the ecological systems of coastal south Florida. The data will be made available in real-time online so anyone, anywhere in the world can monitor the conditions of the Florida Reef tract.

New discovery could slow Parkinson’s disease and reduce life-threatening lung injury

Scientists at Florida International University have developed a promising new compound that could slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease and protect against life-threatening lung injury by targeting a key process inside cells.

The research centers on dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1), which helps control how mitochondria – often described as the powerhouses of cells – divide and function. When DRP1 becomes overactive, it can lead to impaired mitochondrial function, inflammation and cell damage linked to disease.

In preclinical tests, the compound, CTS2444-32, reduced DRP1 activity by up to 45%, helping limit damage in both brain and lung disease models.

Kim Tieu, a professor of environmental health sciences at FIU Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, has spent years studying DRP1’s role in Parkinson’s, a disease marked by tremors, stiffness and the loss of brain cells. He collaborated on the discovery with Stephen Black, director of the FIU Center for Translational Science and associate dean for research at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (FIU Medicine), who is an expert in acute lung injury, and Adel Nefzi, a medicinal chemist at FIU Medicine.

“DRP1 plays an important role in mitochondrial division,” Tieu said. “But when it gets too active, it causes the mitochondria to split more than they should, which can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation and cell death – key factors in how Parkinson’s disease progresses.”

In Parkinson’s models, CTS2444-32 reduced inflammation in the brain and lowered levels of toxic proteins such as alpha-synuclein, which are closely linked to the disease.

A joyful splash: Adapted swim lessons improve water safety skills for children with autism

The program builds on research by Carson and Santiago Perez, published in Frontiers in Rehabilitation Sciences. The study examined 164 children with disabilities who participated in five-day swim programs across the United States. The children, ages 3 to 18, were assessed on their swim abilities at the beginning and end of the program.

By the end of the five days, many had made clear progress.

Swim skills were measured on a four-level scale, from non-swimmer to advanced. Overall, almost 62% of participants improved by at least one level. The number of children classified as non-swimmers dropped from 53% at the start of the program to just 22.5% by the end.

Autistic children showed similar gains, with 62.5% improving by at least one level.
The program focuses on adapting how skills are taught – breaking them into smaller steps, allowing time to build comfort and addressing challenges such as fear of the water.

Among children who did not improve during the five days, instructors most often cited fearfulness as the top reason for autistic children. For children with Down syndrome, the most common explanation was they needed more time to practice.

While the study focused on short-term gains, the researchers say the implications are broader. Helping children build even basic swimming skills can improve confidence, increase independence and, most importantly, reduce risk.

“Every child deserves the chance to be safe in the water,” Santiago Perez said. “This is one step toward making that possible.”

Hospital “huddles” speed up decision-making to accelerate diagnosis and discharge

The fast-paced, high-pressure environment often portrayed in emergency department TV dramas reflects a real challenge in hospitals: how to diagnose patients quickly and move them safely through care under intense time pressure.

A new study from FIU Business finds that brief, structured team meetings among hospital staff — known as progression-of-care huddles — can significantly speed diagnosis and discharge times.

The research, led by Paulo Gomes, an associate professor of information systems and business analytics, found that regular huddles reduced diagnostic decision time by 14% and cut discharge time by nearly 40% for patients requiring complex care coordination. The findings appear in the Journal of Health Organization and Management.

Importantly, faster decision-making did not come at the expense of patient safety. The study found no increase in 30-day hospital readmissions, a key measure of care quality.

“In healthcare, safety and quality are always the priority,” Gomes said. “What we found is that the process becomes faster without sacrificing quality.”

The study analyzed nearly 6,800 patient cases over a 14-month period in a hospital clinical decision unit, comparing performance before and after the implementation of short, interdisciplinary meetings involving physicians, nurses, social workers and care coordinators.

“In those settings, many professionals must coordinate their actions under uncertainty,” Gomes said. “The huddle works as an attention-directing mechanism — it brings everyone together and focuses the team on the problem that needs to be solved.”

The meetings, typically about 15 minutes and held throughout the day, allow staff to review each patient’s status, discuss pending tests or consultations and identify obstacles that could delay treatment or discharge. Researchers found that these structured conversations helped clinicians reach diagnoses faster by improving information sharing and creating a shared understanding of each patient’s condition.

“Huddles are particularly valuable when tasks are not routine,” Gomes said. “When uncertainty is high, bringing people together helps teams align around what needs to happen next.”

The impact was strongest in cases requiring coordination across multiple specialists and administrative processes, such as arranging care with physical therapists, insurance providers and post-acute facilities.

The research showed that for huddles to be effective, organizations need timely information systems, clear pathways to escalate and resolve issues and participants with decision-making authority. They must also be treated as an operational priority, with fixed schedules, concise formats and focused agendas that embed them into daily workflows.

As hospitals face growing demand and resource constraints, the study highlights how improving team coordination can deliver meaningful gains in both efficiency and quality of patient care.

Everglades restoration strengthens South Florida’s climate resilience, study finds

The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida and Florida International University (FIU) are launching an initiative to examine phosphorus in Big Cypress National Preserve.

Big Cypress is a protected area encompassing 729,000 acres northwest of Everglades National Park and a central piece of the Everglades ecosystem. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant growth, but excess phosphorus, mostly coming from agricultural and urban sources, can lead to ecosystem changes that negatively impact species and ecosystem functions.

The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida will contribute $600,000 over the next three years to help fund FIU water quality research in the western Everglades region. Evelyn Gaiser, aquatic ecologist and George M. Barley Jr. Endowed Scholars Chair, and researcher Kelsey Solomon will conduct controlled experiments to evaluate how different levels of phosphorus impact the local ecosystem.

“This historic gift marks a major victory for the tribe, FIU, and most importantly, the greater Everglades environment,” Gaiser said. “It builds upon the long-standing relationship between FIU and the Miccosukee Tribe to ensure that water quality and wilderness are protected while water flow to the region is being restored.”

For years, FIU and the tribe have worked together to protect the iconic and imperiled Florida Everglades as part of the largest ecosystem restoration project on the planet. Researchers in FIU’s Institute of Environment have been leading the science behind Everglades research and restoration for decades. Gaiser was part of the FIU team and helped lead the research that led to the establishment of a water-quality standard to protect Everglades National Park from excess phosphorus sources. The standard was incorporated into the federal Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan and is still in place today. The tribe seeks to partner with FIU in supporting the next generation of scientists working toward a sustainable future for the Everglades.

Gaiser and Solomon, who is FIU’s George M. Barley Jr. Post Doctoral Fellow, are leveraging that experience in this new partnership for Big Cypress. The project’s goal is to ensure healthy wetlands that can continue to support wildlife and cultural traditions.

“Water quality is crucial to maintaining the health of the Everglades, and this collaboration with FIU is an important step toward safeguarding the wetlands that the tribe and countless species depend on,” said Talbert Cypress, chairman of the Miccosukee Tribe. “We are proud to be part of a partnership that not only protects the tribe’s cultural heritage but also serves as a model of sustainable environmental stewardship.”

The research is kicking off as preparations are under way for the start of the Western Everglades Restoration Project, which is tentatively scheduled to begin next year. Gaiser said the data collected as part of this collaborative research project could aid water quality management decisions. In addition to FIU and the tribe, other partners include Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades Foundation and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

“This is a prime example of how combining Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge – the beliefs about the relationships between living beings and their environment – with science could achieve truly transformative results for environmental conservation,” Solomon said.

Mike Heithaus has traveled the world to unravel the mysteries of sharks and other difficult-to-study marine animals. For his contributions to scientific knowledge, exploration, discovery and science communications, he has been named an Explorers Club fellow.

Well-known internationally through his research on large sharks, sea turtles and dolphins, Heithaus also serves as dean of FIU’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education.

The Explorers Club is an international professional society known for long-held exacting standards for membership and a strict vetting process. It promotes and supports the scientific exploration of land, sea, air and space by sponsoring research and education in the natural, geographic and biological sciences, cultural documentation, and humanitarian support and outreach. Members have included men and women who were first to the North Pole, first to the South Pole, first to the summit of Mount Everest, first to the deepest point in the ocean, and first to the surface of the moon. Heithaus received his formal invitation this spring.

Renowned oceanographer and Explorers Club member Sylvia Earle wrote in support of Heithaus’ nomination, emphasizing his use of cutting-edge technologies including drones and animal-borne cameras to study dolphins, seals, sharks, turtles and whales. In her reference letter, she also noted his long-term research in Shark Bay, Australia.

For more than 20 years, Heithaus has conducted one of the world’s most in-depth studies on sharks — answering critical questions about how sharks live and function, as well as how they help maintain healthy populations of other animals and even ocean plants. These findings have helped inform conservation priorities and strategies worldwide.

“In the best traditions of the Explorers Club, Dean Heithaus has clearly evidenced his commitment to the furtherance of exploration, discovery and science. He is an ardent defender of the natural world and is dedicated to sharing his research and exploration with the rest of the world,” said Mireya Mayor, director of the College of Arts, Sciences & Education’s Exploration and Science Communications and Explorers Club fellow. “I know he will bring an abundance of energy — as well as a wealth of firsthand experience as a scientist-explorer — to the Explorers Club.”

To be named an Explorers Club Fellow, scientists must have a proven record of contributing scientific findings through fieldwork or explorations. Throughout his career, Heithaus has authored or co-authored more than 175 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and co-edited four books on the biology of sharks and their relatives. He is also one of the lead researchers for Global Finprint, an international project supported by the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation that is providing desperately needed information to protect sharks and rays along the world’s coral reefs and help rebuild populations that are in trouble.

New research from FIU's College of Business suggests that how creative work is made may matter just as much as the final product, especially when artificial intelligence is involved.

Generative AI is now commonly used in creative fields like marketing and music, but a recent study in Academy of Management Discoveries reveals that creators who disclose using AI face negative judgments, regardless of their existing reputation.

The research, conducted by Joel Carnevale, assistant professor of management at FIU Business, in collaboration with researchers at Syracuse University, sought to answer whether a stellar reputation shields creators from criticism when they use AI.

The answer: It does not.

In one experiment, participants evaluated a video game soundtrack. Everyone heard the same composition, but the description of the composer varied.

Some were told the piece was created by Hans Zimmer, the Oscar-winning composer behind “Inception”, “Dune” and “The Dark Knight” trilogy. Others were told the same music came from a first-year college student with no professional standing. In half the scenarios, participants also were told the composition was created “in collaboration with AI.”

Although Zimmer’s name was used in the study to represent a famous, recognizable composer, Zimmer has previously said that he, personally, would not use AI to compose music.

“Regardless of whether the composer was Hans Zimmer or a student just starting out, disclosing AI use led to more negative evaluations,” Carnevale said.

Reputational prestige and creative competence declined substantially when AI use was disclosed. Even a household name in film music was not insulated from skepticism once AI entered the picture.

Reputation still mattered — just not enough to prevent damage.

When the composer was described as Hans Zimmer, participants were more likely to credit the human creator and assume AI played a smaller role. When described as an unknown student, they assumed heavier AI reliance.

“That was the one limited benefit of reputation,” Carnevale said. “People were more willing to believe that a highly respected creator was still driving the creative process.”

The effect extended beyond the arts. In another experiment, participants evaluated a highly regarded advertising employee known for strong ideas and awards. Again, AI use reduced reputational standing.

“When people believe AI was used in the creative work, even if they are not told how much it was used, they start questioning whether the creativity is genuine,” Carnevale said. “Authenticity turned out to be the key mechanism.”

Disclosing that AI was used for administrative tasks softened the backlash slightly but did not eliminate it. Participants were also less likely to seek collaboration with an AI-reliant colleague.

The researchers stress that their findings are not an argument against AI, noting prior studies show it can enhance creative output. Instead, the work highlights a gap between technological capability and social perception.

“Right now, AI carries a reputational tax,” Carnevale said. “Creators have to manage not just the work itself, but also perceptions surrounding how the work came to be.”

For now, even the most celebrated creatives are not immune.

“If someone like Hans Zimmer doesn’t get a free pass,” Carnevale said, “that tells us just how powerful these perceptions still are and how carefully creators need to think about their image when collaborating with AI.”

Florida International University on Friday announced a new initiative aimed at supporting Cuba’s transition to democracy.

The announcement was made during the unveiling of a statue of President Ronald W. Reagan in front of FIU’s Ronald W. Reagan Presidential House, on what would have been President Reagan’s 115th birthday. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis attended the ceremony.

The 7.5-foot tall bronze statue was created by Cuban American artist Carlos Enrique Prado. Reagan’s leadership is widely recognized with helping bring about the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Cuba is at the center of international attention at the moment, as the island faces a crippling economic crisis. The U.S. has signaled growing support for regime change in Cuba after 67 years of communist rule.

Under the leadership of President Nuñez, FIU will marshal resources in a wide array of disciplines, drawing on the university’s long-standing scholarship, regional and national ties and commitment to democratic values, to support the transition.

“This effort will bring together scholars and experts in areas including governance, economics, medicine, public health, the environment, education, technology, infrastructure, architecture, national security, engineering, art, law and civil society to ensure that the intellect, lived experience and resolve of this community are used to steer Cuba toward freedom and democracy, once and for all” said FIU President Jeanette M. A new high-rise student housing facility planned just steps from Florida International University’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus will significantly expand living options for students seeking a campus-connected residential experience.

The 21-story building, planned for a site directly across from campus on 107 Avenue in Sweetwater, will offer 820 beds in apartment-style units designed specifically for students. Construction is expected to be completed in 2028, with students moving in for the Fall 2028 semester.

The facility will become FIU’s first affiliated off-campus student housing development, created through a long-term housing agreement that integrates the building into the university’s residential life ecosystem. While privately owned, developed and operated, the building will include an FIU residence director living on site, coordinating student programming, engagement activities, and support services—extending the campus residential experience beyond university-owned housing.

“FIU’s student success agenda requires housing solutions that are convenient, high quality, and closely aligned with the campus experience,” said FIU President Jeanette M. Nuñez. “This project expands options for our students within minutes of the Modesto A. Maidique Campus, strengthens the residential experience through FIU supported programming, and reflects the kind of mission aligned collaboration that delivers real value for our students and our community.”

Demand for student housing near FIU continues to outpace supply. FIU currently has a new on-campus residence hall under construction, yet demand remains strong, with a continued waitlist for university-owned housing.

“Even as we add significant new housing on campus, the demand from students for a residential experience close to FIU remains exceptionally high,” said Andrew Naylor, senior director of housing and residential experience at FIU. “This affiliated facility allows us to respond to that demand thoughtfully—by expanding capacity while ensuring students still benefit from the programming, support, and sense of belonging that define FIU housing.”

Today, approximately 10,000 FIU students live on campus or within walking distance of the Modesto A. Maidique Campus, creating one of the most vibrant university-adjacent residential communities in South Florida. University leaders say expanding housing options near campus is critical to student success, supporting retention, engagement, and timely degree completion.

The project also reflects FIU’s continued upward trajectory as a leading public research university. As FIU expands its research enterprise, earns national recognition, and advances toward its goal of becoming a Top 30 public university by 2030, student interest and enrollment demand have grown in parallel. University leaders say that momentum—combined with FIU’s academic strength, research profile, and student success outcomes—is driving sustained demand for housing near campus, making strategic, campus-connected residential options a core part of FIU’s long-term planning.
